From our workshop to the Old City Harbour.

Every vehicle boarding a ferry in Tallinn’s Old City Harbour is read, measured and weighed on the way in. Plate recognition and weigh-in-motion data go straight into Nortal’s Smart Port system, and the moment that data is ready, the driver’s gate, terminal and place in the queue appear on an Ampron LED board in front of them. No radio call and nobody waving from a booth.

About 170 of our boards do that job across Terminals A and D, in five formats: overhead portals, check-in and direction boards, lane boards in the collection area, loading-area boards and roof-edge lane lightboxes. Terminal A went live in 2016 and Terminal D during 2017. Since 2022 our DR Series units have been the replacements.

The hard part was never the pixels. It was taking live data from someone else’s software without anyone touching it, and staying readable in Baltic harbour weather, winter after winter.

The display should fit the project, not the other way around.

No two infrastructure projects are exactly the same.

The location, viewing distance, mounting conditions, content requirements and existing systems can all be different.

Visibility is not just about brightness.

When choosing outdoor or infrastructure displays, brightness is important - but it is not the whole story.

Real readability depends on many factors:

• viewing distance
• viewing angle
• sunlight and weather conditions
• anti-glare protection
• font size
• content contrast
• installation position

A display can have high brightness, but if the information is hard to read in real conditions, it does not solve the problem.
