First Time Right

Logging data doesn’t have to be a snooze fest. Sure, rushing through feels fast, but trust me, a messy sheet will come back to haunt you.

Start strong by giving everything clear labels and consistent names. You could think of it like setting up a tidy room - if it’s organized from the get go, you won’t spend ages searching for things later.

Consistency is key! Whether it’s dates, numbers, or formats, stick to the same rulebook. Plus, throw in some validation rules if you can to stop weird data from sneaking in when no one's looking.

And here’s the secret sauce: think ahead. Will you need to sort by month or year? Split that date into separate columns now, and thank yourself later when you're cruising through your analysis without missing a beat. Keep it neat from the start, and the data will practically analyze itself. Wink.

Data Can Lie

"If you torture data enough, it’ll confess to anything" my manager always used to say. She was on point.

With enough slicing, dicing, and tweaking, you can make data say whatever you want. Once more for those in the back - even true data can be made to lie. Want to prove coffee causes success? Find a tiny study where CEOs drink coffee. Want to “prove” it’s bad? Find one where people who drink six cups a day have heart issues.

This is called p-hacking, and it’s why results should always be questioned. Were different angles tested? What's the sample size? Were results handpicked to confirm the narrative?

Good analysis isn’t about getting the answer you want, it’s about getting the answer that’s real.

Reverse Lottery Effect

Ever notice how when one person wins the lottery, it’s all over the news, making it seem like lots of people must be winning? Meanwhile, nobody talks about the millions that lost. It's crickets on that side.

This happens in business data too. The one customer who raved about a product might get featured in every marketing report, while the thousands who left bad reviews get ignored. Focusing only on rare, flashy events creates a distorted picture, like assuming the lottery is a great investment strategy.

It works both ways, and media loves to blow negatives out of proportion, creating the same effect. You know that one freak accident that makes people avoid an activity entirely? Or when one unhappy customer goes viral? Suddenly, the whole company is "failing." One bad quarter? "The economy is collapsing!"

Remember - one data point doesn’t make a trend. Always look at all the bits, the good and the bad. The boring together with the exciting. The yay-saying as well as the nay-saying.

When Data Fails Women

For centuries, data has been collected with a male default, from medical studies to workplace trends. The result? Women get seatbelts that don’t fit, voice assistants that misunderstand them, and health research that overlooks their symptoms. Even crash test dummies were designed around the "average male," making cars less safe for women.

Data isn’t just numbers, it’s who and what gets measured. When women are left out, decisions based on that data fail them in real life: in medicine, in technology, in business.

So this Women’s Day, let’s remember: better data means better outcomes for everyone. The world runs on data, and it’s about time it fit all of us.

Is It Real-Time?

Everyone loves real-time data, but fresh doesn’t always mean useful, at least not on its own. If you check stock prices every five minutes, you’ll see wild swings but that doesn't help with long term investing?

The same goes for business decisions. Looking at today’s numbers without historical background can make small blips seem like huge trends. Sometimes, older, well analyzed data is far more valuable than whatever just updated on your dashboard.

You have to be smart about it. Don’t get distracted by the newest number but rather focus on the bigger picture together with the latest info.

"Perfect" Data

If the data looks too clean, too perfect, and too convenient, it’s probably lying to you.

Real world data is messy. There are outliers, gaps, and weird anomalies. If a report shows flawless growth with no issues, either someone cherrypicked the data, or ignored key problems.

Trustworthy analysis doesn’t aim for a perfect story, it aims for a true one. So if the data looks too good to be true, it probably is, and you should reach for your inner sceptic. Reality is never neat, but a good analyst will help make sense of it anyway.

Choice Paralysis

Ever spent an hour scrolling through Netflix, unable to pick a movie? That’s choice paralysis, and it happens in data too.

More metrics, more reports, more dashboards sounds great, but too many options can overwhelm decision making. Instead of leading to better insights, it often causes analysis paralysis, where nothing actually gets done because there’s too much to consider.

Good analysts don’t just collect data, they filter out the noise and focus on what actually matters. Fewer correct choices allow making truly informed decisions.

An Ode to Median

If a billionaire moves to your neighborhood, the average resident suddenly becomes ultrarich. Sadly for you, it doesn’t mean you can stop budgeting for rent.

Averages can be wildly misleading if incorrectly used. A company might claim “the average salary increased by 30%”, but if one exec got a million dollar raise (ahem) while the rest stayed the same, that number is meaningless. That’s why analysts often also look at medians, distributions, and real impact, rather than trusting a single shiny statistic.

Next time someone brags about an impressive “average,” ask: “But what does that mean for the typical person?” Because sometimes, averages tell fairy tales.

Data Like an Estonian

While some countries are still buried in paperwork, Estonia runs on digital efficiency. Need to sign a contract? Do it online. Need to file taxes? It takes minutes. Estonia’s e-Government system means 99% of public services are digital, proving that when data is clean, structured, and accessible, life gets a whole lot easier.

In analytics, efficiency matters just as much. A messy spreadsheet with duplicated, outdated, and scattered data is like a bureaucracy that still relies on fax machines, it just slows everything down. Good data should be like Estonia’s digital systems: fast, organized, and working for you, not against you.

Therefore, when your data feels like a confusing pile of red tape, ask yourself: "How can I make this more Estonian?"

Happy birthday, Estonia!

The Growth Illusion

Imagine a business boasting "200% growth in customers!" Sounds incredible. Until you realize they went from 1 customer to 3. Technically true? Yes. But a game changer? Not exactly.

Percentages can be misleading when the numbers involved are minute and any fluctuation leads to huge deviances. A company growing from 1 million to 1.1 million only sees a 10% increase, but that’s 100,000 new customers, a much bigger deal in reality.

So next time someone throws out a massive percentage, ask them: “200% of what?” Because in data, as in life, the starting point makes all the difference 😉
