๐ถI'm glad to share that I recently delivered a two-day workshop at Ain Shams University, hosted by the Department of Landscape Architecture, Faculty of Engineering โ
marking the beginning of a new series on Heritage ร Academia ร Design.
๐ Workshop Title: Mixed-Use Developments โ Balancing Functionality and Cultural Heritage
๐ Delivered by: Associate Professor Hanaa Moosa, Founder of Rithu โ Heritage Conservation Consultancy
๐
Dates: Day 1 โ March 19, 2025 | Day 2 โ April 12, 2025
This two-day workshop immersed students in the complexities of designing within heritage contextsโwhere architecture meets cultural meaning and sustainable function.
๐ฟThe workshop explored how design can act as a bridge between cultural heritage and contemporary urban needs. Students engaged deeply with:
โ๏ธ Contextual studies and heritage value mapping
โ๏ธ Integration of local crafts, tourism, and social infrastructure
โ๏ธ Design development combining public, residential, and cultural functions
โ๏ธ Conceptual proposals focused on Historic Cairo
The goal was to encourage students to see design not just as form-making, but as a practice of cultural continuity and regeneration.
This workshop ๐ถkicks off a new series where Iโll be sharing our academic engagements at Rithu๐ถ โ including:
๐น Customized workshops
๐น Research-based lectures
๐น Studio collaborations
๐น Academic-industry projects grounded in heritage
๐ฉIf your department is interested in exploring collaboration, Iโd be happy to connect!
