Solid waste management is a huge challenge for the Egyptian government, because of high population, increased waste generation and lack of waste collection infrastructure and disposal facilities.
Cairo by itself produces more than 15,000 tons of solid waste daily while only around 60% of the solid waste is managed by the formal and informal waste collection, disposal or recycling operations while the rest is thrown on city streets or at illegal dump sites.
In fact, disposal of solid waste in water bodies has lead to contamination of water supplies is several parts of the city!
The poor management of waste is causing serious ecological and public health problems in Egypt. This is why coordinated efforts are needed to improve waste collection and disposal services across the country.

What are the types of Waste Management?
1. Landfill: in which disposed material such as household and demolition waste are buried with light contaminants like wood products, asphalt and natural materials such as rock and clay that are disposed to land.
2. Recovery: it is converting waste, such as coal and wood, into sources of energy such as heat or electricity.
3. Composting: it is the bio-degradation process of transforming the organic waste (for example, food waste) into plant fertilizers.
4. Recycling: in which inorganic substances (cans, cardboard, and plastic) can be transformed into a valuable material or object.
5. Waste Minimization: which is reusing things we already have or repairing broken items, and avoiding usage of disposable materials.
