10 Traits of a Great
Have self-confidence and be as adept at delivering bad news as good. There’s nothing worse than who are not sure of themselves, especially when they’re being asked about sensitive issues.
Have a good understanding of the business and of themselves. A consultant has theoretical and practical knowledge. It’s important to know what solutions have worked in the past and to have ideas about how to improve them.
Have transferable skills. Cookie-cutter approaches are weak. A great consultant is able to apply learning across different situations to come up with innovative ideas. The result should be practical new strategies that are credible—and that work.
Have the ability to simplify and explain a problem. Not every customer cares about regression analysis. A consultant needs tools to explain ideas simply, whether through a diagram or a metaphor.
Have more than one solution to a problem. Stuff happens and things change. Successful consultants foresee multiple solutions. They are also ready to think on their feet when challenged and to improvise.
Be a good listener. Consultants never assume and don’t hesitate to ask questions until they understand their clients’ needs fully.
Be a team player. While personal goals are important, the customer’s goal must come first.
Be able to market. Self-employed consultants are often great at client work but miss out on marketing. You need to be good at both to stay in business.
Gain client trust. To uncover the real issues, you have to be able to develop a strong relationship with your clients. Passion for their cause helps, but for integrity, you also need to be a critical friend.

Tips on Choosing and Working with
1. Ask your colleagues for referrals of consultants that they have used.
2. Contact your state medical and state professional societies for recommendations.
3. Carefully review the consultant's credentials. Pay particular attention to how long the consultant or firm has been in business. Verify their experience with the specific type of project that you want them to address.
4. When appropriate, find out their familiarity with regionally specific issues. This is particularly important with managed care or reimbursement problems.
5. Review the firm's client base over the past two or three years.
6. Check references, especially other specialty practices or those with projects similar to yours.
7. Read articles and attend programs that the consultant presents.
8. Ask for samples of work.
9. During the initial consultation, try to gauge the degree of rapport between you and the consultant. You must feel comfortable with this person or group. They must understand your goals.
10. Put everything in writing. An oral agreement is not worth the paper it is written on. The contract should include services, projects, due dates and compensation.
11. Start small, especially if this is your first experience working with a consultant.
12. Make certain that the consultant has sufficient time and resources to devote to the project

Tips to Help Improve Your Business:(part 1)
1. Be a more efficient time manager by using the rule of two. Focus on the two most important tasks in your day, and you’ll become more productive.
2. Write two to-do lists. The first should contain everything that you need to get done soon. It should be a comprehensive list of short-, medium-, and long-term projects and work, and you should constantly adjust it. The second to-do list should be what you can reasonably expect to get done today, and today only.
3. Schedule some reading time. There’s not a job that doesn’t require at least some reading, be it about the company, the industry, the marketplace, the economy, the price of tomatoes, etc.
4. Take on just one new activity at a time. When you try to master too many new activities at once, you can easily feel overwhelmed.
5. Carry a small notebook with you everywhere. This is your “worry” journal. When you feel stressed, whip it out and scribble down everything on your mind at that minute.
6. If you are always running late, sit down with a pencil and paper and see how you are actually allotting your time. Adjusting your schedule can improve your time management skills, thus causing you to be on time.
7. On a daily action list, categorize tasks: those that need immediate attention (you had better do them yourself), those that can be delegated, and those that can be put off. To avoid procrastination, tackle the toughest jobs first, breaking them into smaller, less daunting components.
8. Reduce the waste—and frustration—of everyday delays. Wherever you go, take reading material or a portable music player. Then when you have to wait, you can make good use of or enjoy the time.
9. Be patient.
10. Make a point of sharing your knowledge with young professionals as well as high-level executives. Both will remember you for your time and consideration.
