How much energy do pumps really consume?

Pump energy consumption is directly proportional to the flow rate, the pump head, the efficiency of the pump and the motor.

In cooling applications, the energy provided to the pump itself and transferred to the water has to be compensated by the chillers. Therefore, pumping energy needs to be paid twice in cooling: at the pump and at the chiller.

- In heating systems, recent research* demonstrates that pumps represent 1.5 % of the annual energy consumption in buildings such as offices, schools, hospitals.
- In cooling systems, electrical pumping costs (constant flow distribution) represent 7 % to 17 % of the annual cooling energy consumption.

Hydronic pipes sizing?

Criteria for sizing pipes are different from country to country
but all have a common basis.

Using small pipe sizes:

- decreases the installation investment cost,
- means higher linear differential pressure and velocities which leads to: high pumping costs and differential pressure variations with the load, high circulation noise and erosion (particle transport).

Using large pipe sizes:

- increases the investment cost,
- means lower pumping costs, differential pressure variations, circulation noise, erosion: results in low circulation velocities that causes deposit of heavier particles leading to clogging by accumulation.

Consequently the generally used procedure consists in selecting the smallest pipe size that satisfies a maximum linear pressure drop and a maximum velocity. Consult our website: https://forceibiza.com/
