General Officer Commanding Area Military Health Formation Staff Visit: Strengthening Military Healthcare in Gauteng

Between 25 and 29 May, the newly appointed General Officer Commanding Brigadier General (Dr) W.S. Mntambo embarked on a significant staff visit across Gauteng’s military Health Units. This was not just a ceremonial introduction, but a purposeful mission to meet members, understand the realities of Sickbays and Health Centres, and reinforce the importance of military healthcare in sustaining operational readiness.

The visit began in the East Rand, where the GOC engaged with personnel at Kempton Park, Dunnottar, and Heidelberg Sickbays. Moving into the West Rand, he visited the Doornkop and Lenz Sickbays, ensuring that no corner of the province was overlooked. The tour culminated in Pretoria, with a comprehensive itinerary that included Woonderboom Sickbay, Waterkloof, Defence Headquarters Sickbay, Garrison Health Centre, Regional Occupational Health and Safety, Air Force Gymnasium, 68 Air School, Personnel Services School, Army Headquarters, Dental Clinic Thaba Tshwane, Military Health Training Formation and CHA Centre.

Leadership visibility is vital in military structures, and the GOC’s presence sent a clear message of solidarity and support. By engaging directly with healthcare staff, he gained valuable operational insight into the challenges faced on the ground, from resource constraints to patient care demands.

The visit concluded with a communication period at AMHU Gauteng, ensuring that feedback was captured.
