Construction of 2,160MW Koysha hydropower dam in Ethiopia is 39% complete. The dam is the the fourth hydropower project under construction on Omo River.
According to the Minister of Water, Irrigation and Energy, Dr Seleshi Bekele, construction works at the dam are progressing well. “This project shows how our country Ethiopia is utilizing its water resources for a sustainable development and to improve the livelihoods of its citizens,” he said during his visit to the construction site alongside the Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Dr. Vera Songwe.

The new flyover in Giza, near Cairo, is something to behold. The road runs so close to the adjacent apartment buildings that some residents can reach out of their windows and touch it (see picture). One jokingly told a local newspaper that he would invite passing motorists in for tea on his balcony. But the road is more than just an object of ridicule. To many Egyptians, it is a symbol of their government’s ineptitude, as it pursues an ambitious national development plan.

The scale of construction, which includes highways linking new and planned cities, is vast. In August the transport minister, Kamel al-Wazir, said 130bn Egyptian pounds ($8.3bn) had been allocated to complete 1,000 bridges and tunnels by 2024 (about 600 are already done). The goal is to double Egypt’s urban space over the next 30 years. President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, a former general, wants the work done quickly.

The Chartered Institute of Building’s (CIOB) Construction Manager of the Year Awards (CMYA) event has been moved online for 2020.

The CIOB said it had made the decision to move this year’s CMYA celebration evening to a virtual event, as more restrictions are imposed in the UK to limit gatherings.

It said the virtual format would allow it to “safely deliver these important celebrations in a new and exciting way” and that it remained committed to celebrating the work of the industry and the finalists’ inspirational achievements.

In the first half of 2020, the Ethiopia-Djibouti Standard Gauge Railway has seen a 51 percent rise in revenues, despite the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, it was disclosed. The railway’s revenue had increased 45 percent in 2019 compared to that of 2018 and has seen a rise of 51.38 percent in the first half of 2020, compared to the same period of the previous year.

Work for the construction of the first wind power plant in Mozambique is currently underway in Namaacha district in the southern province of Maputo, the country’s national radio station RM reported on Monday.

The private infrastructure, worth about 280 million U.S. dollars, is expected to have the capacity to produce an average of 120 megawatts of energy for the state electricity company EDM to distribute when it goes into operation three years later, said the report.

A Chinese construction firm, SINOMA Engineering, has started constructing a new industrial park in Hawassa town, the regional capital of the newly formed Sidama regional state.

Hired by the Hawassa Textile and Industrial Park S.C., SINOMA Engineering will undertake the construction of the garment industrial park. Since March, the site’s listings have nearly doubled to more than 50,000 from nearly 700 dealers.

A large amount of the inquiries the company receives come from Egypt, says Kuba. The country is in the midst of developing the New Cairo district of the Egyptian capital and the construction projects that were already in progress are once again in full swing, as they are in nearby Oman and Iraq.
