HELSINKI PRIDE 2022! 🖤🤎❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
The biggest human rights event in Finland was held last week (27.6. - 03.7.2022)!
The parade on 02.7 had around 80.000 people participating. It was an incredible event to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and promote an inclusive, non-discrimination future for everyone. Helsinki Pride Week has grown year by year and shows that society at large supports equal human rights for all.

A couple of weeks ago, our BusinessWiz CEO Priyanka Banerjee was invited to Wärtsilä Corporation DEI Talks at their Helsinki campus, along side with Jenni Kurkikangas, HR Director at Metso Outotec. It was an incredible experience for us to learn about the DEI journeys of Metso Outotec and Wärsilä, and share our own insights.

Teija Sarajärvi - EVP of Human Resources from Wärtsilä shared some of the positive development Wärtsilä has achieved in the past years. In 2021, for example, they reached their biggest milestones so far, launching their first global Diversity & Inclusion program, Conversations of Understanding, and achieved fully equal average annual salaries between men and women.

Meanwhile, Jenni Kurkikangas from Metso Outotec shared how they have linked D&I to performance, and built awareness through global training inclusion campaigns and employee resource groups. Metso Outotec also launched Global fair pay initiative and Women’s mentoring programme.

On the other hand, our Priyanka Banerjee's talk focused on the importance of data in an organization's DEI (Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion) journey. In addition, data is also important when we want to understand why DEI has a moral, ethical and a strong business case for companies. Priyanka showed in indisputable data how diversity benefits companies, and how diverse teams outperform and are more innovative than homogenous ones.

Integration vs Inclusion and Thrive as an LGBTQ+ Ally

We are still living in Pride Month 2022. We are seeing a lot of social media posts, events, and talks to support the LGBTQ+ movement. Now it is time to understand, how to include the LGBTQ+ community in our everyday workplace, and an important role in this is played by allies.

How do we ensure that our DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) strategy provides a sense of belonging and inclusion? Does our culture make people feel included or are they reluctantly trying to integrate?

As LGBTQ+ allies, we need to understand how to create inclusive workplaces, where we feel psychological safety, have a sense of belonging, and not imposing people to integrate into the existing norms.

"To mainstream LGBT+ diversity in organizations, it is imperative that the culture and environment open up to differences. Inclusion does not mean integration. Inclusion is reached when the needs of LGBT+ employees are fully integrated throughout all key systems and processes of the organization internally, visibly represented externally, and when leaders include all aspects of diversity in a transparent manner."

It's . BusinessWiz wants to send the warmest greetings to our LGBTQ+ friends!

If you haven't known already, June was chosen as Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall riots which took place in June 1969 and started the LGBTQ+ rights movement.

Many Pride events have been held around the world this June to raise awareness about gender and sexual orientation diversity, to celebrate the gay liberation journey, and to fight for equality and recognition that the international LGBTQ+ community deserves.

As acceptance and inclusion at working places is one of the most important goals for the Pride movement, Workplace Pride is organizing an international conference to "acknowledge the struggle and look to the future that LGBTQ+ community, and the organizations they work for will determine together".

This week our co-founders Priyanka Banerjee and Samuli Yrjönen have been attending the EMERGE conference in Yerevan, Armenia.

Emerge is one of the top tech conferences in the 'New East' and this year it was amazing to see a strong focus on the topics of Diversity, Inclusion and Care.

We have been super active throughout the conference, sharing our journey, meeting new people, learning a lot, cheering & supporting the inspiring female founders (Margo Lazarenkova and Alina Nilsson) and collaborating with the whole team of the conference (and of course, enjoying the amazing feasts and afterparties😁). It has been truly an amazing experience ❤

We will be sharing more stories, learnings and insights on why including DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) within a tech conference and startup culture is the most important thing to do today.

Our DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) Mastermind group met again this month with more interesting DEI journeys and learning.

This time we had the pleasure to learn about the DEI journey of Brella, presented by Hanna Kontinen. Her talk was impactful, as it showed how a new company could approach DEI with limited resources and work towards building an inclusive company culture.

Building an inclusive company culture is easier if the foundation starts very early, therefore, for startups, it is essential to work towards their DEI journey from the very get-go. But in reality, not many startups or scaleups focus on developing their company culture due to a lack of resources and understanding. Hopefully, with increasing awareness and insights, more companies will understand how they can advance their company culture from the very beginning.

We also heard another compelling personal journey from DEI consultant Hodan Mohamed about how her work shifted from being a Pharmacist to starting Hodan and now to helping companies in their DEI journey.

Thank you for sharing your stories, it is such a privilege to learn from so many people with diverse backgrounds and different DEI journeys. Next month, we will meet in person. Stay tuned for more updates!
