India Bio-Energy Expo 2026 is getting closer. 🇮🇳
For Arciplug®, the conversation starts with the feedstock.

A smaller reactor mean lower capacity

𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐚 𝐦𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞?
There was a time when mobile phones were large because technology gave us no smaller alternative.
Then innovation changed what was possible.
Phones became smaller while their capacity, intelligence and functionality continued to grow.

𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬.
The same principle applies to reactor design.
A compact reactor can simply mean that more of the space inside it is filled with organic material that produces biogas – instead of added water.

Every cubic metre inside a biogas reactor has a purpose.
In many biogas processes, water is added to make pumping and mixing easier – or even possible.
But added water does not produce biogas.

The plant still has to be built and operated to carry it through the entire process.
That means:
✔️ more reactor volume to build
✔️ more mass to heat
✔️ more material to move and manage
✔️ larger digestate storage requirements
✔️ more volume to transport or separate afterwards

𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡-𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝.
When more organic material is processed per cubic metre, the reactor volume becomes more productive.
But productive reactor volume is not only about what goes inside.
It is also about how the material moves through the process.

In Arciplug®’s PLUG FLOW Multi Feed Digester, the material moves progressively through the reactor. This controlled forward movement keeps fresh feedstock from taking a shortcut to the outlet and helps ensure that the material remains in the reactor for the intended retention time.

By preventing short-circuiting and giving the biological process sufficient time, the reactor is designed to maximise the biogas potential of each feedstock.

The result is more than a smaller footprint.

It is 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐞, 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐜𝐮𝐛𝐢𝐜 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐞.

👉 The real question is not only how large the reactor is. 𝐈𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 – 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗳 𝗽𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝗽𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲?
When people compare 𝐏𝐋𝐔𝐆 𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐖 with CSTR, the discussion often starts with the initial investment.
That is understandable. But the reactor price alone does not tell you what the plant will cost to operate.
Think about the difference between a basic mechanical system and a modern vehicle.
The value of a modern car is not simply that it contains more technology.
Its sensors, diagnostics and control systems help reveal what is happening, identify changes and support the right response.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐠𝐚𝐬 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭.
A reactor can be a vessel where biomass is processed.
Or it can include process technology designed to control how the material moves, monitor how the biological process responds and help the plant adapt when operating conditions change.

It combines:

This technology affects the upfront price tag.
At the same time, the overall investment remains competitive due to the 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧, 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝.
And once the plant is operating, the technology continues to create value:

⚙️ “It’s peanuts.”
That’s what visitors said when we explained the power consumption of the digester at our Calimera plant.
And honestly — they were surprised.
When people think about anaerobic digestion, they often focus on:
➡️ gas production
➡️ feedstock volumes
➡️ installed capacity
But rarely on what it takes to run the system.
At Calimera, the reaction was always the same:
“How much electricity does the mixing consume?”
When they hear the number…
👉 “That’s it?”
👉 “It’s peanuts compared to the energy you produce.”
And that’s the key point:
In biogas, gross production means nothing without net efficiency.
What really matters:
🔹 Energy produced (CH₄ output)
vs
🔹 Energy consumed (mixing, pumping, heating)
Design matters more than people think
Systems designed for high dilution:
➡️ move more volume
➡️ require more pumping
➡️ need more mixing energy
With high-solids / plug-flow:
✔ less water to move
✔ controlled mixing instead of full suspension
✔ lower parasitic energy demand
👉 The result is simple:
More of the energy stays in the gas.
Less is lost running the plant.
Because in the end:
A plant doesn’t make money on how much it produces.
👉 It makes money on what it keeps.
