Over two days at Ruissalon Telakka - Åbo Båtvarv, entrepreneurs, investors, business leaders, researchers and policymakers came together to turn ideas and opportunities into connections, collaborations and concrete action.

🤝 100+ pre-booked investor–startup meetings connected companies and investors from across Europe through our international matchmaking programme, organised together with Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) Finland and Business Turku.

🏆 NIDO Contech won the A’Pelago Pitch Challenge, taking home the win after pitching alongside an impressive group of Blue Economy ventures.

🌍 20 countries represented and 38 event partners contributing to the ecosystem.

🌊 Day 2 of A’Pelago Initiative 2026 is well underway!

We started the morning by turning yesterday’s energy and insights into action, focusing on one of the biggest questions facing the Blue Economy: how do we unlock the capital needed to turn ocean solutions into scalable businesses?

We heard an inspiring keynote from Lauri Reuter, followed by a thought provoking panel on Balancing Return, Risk & Impact, with moderator Kristiina Michelsson, Sagar Tandon, Jaani Pietikäinen, Simona Chiavassa and Klas Johansen.

We also opened applications for our 2027 programmes (stay tuned for more😉), heard exciting launch news about the Redstone Blue fund's first closing, and kicked off the A’Pelago Pitch Challenge! 🚀

⏭️ 18 startups are taking the stage across four categories: Marine Biomaterials, Blue Food & Coastal Innovation, Ocean Tech and Maritime Solutions. The first four ventures took on the Marine Biomaterials category this morning, with James Hughes setting the scene for the opportunities ahead.

Then it was time to dive deeper. 💡

Our Deep Dives brought participants together to explore AI powered matchmaking for the Baltic Sea, real world research challenges, intellectual property and how investors assess startup teams beyond the pitch.

And of course, there was time for lunch, conversations, matchmaking and meeting the startups at their booths. 🤝

🌊 Last night, after a full day of ideas, discussions, Deep Dives, matchmaking and new connections, we gathered for the Initiative Dinner. A chance to slow down, continue the conversations and celebrate the people bringing the Blue Economy forward. ✨

We also had the chance to hear the official “We Are The Ocean” song, written by our co-founder Timo Ketonen and performed by MPB, as well as “Go A’Pelago Go” by Dines Juhl Barsøe from Just-measure ApS, one of the participants in our Nordic Blue 2026 cohort. 🎶

An evening filled with great food, inspiring conversations and new connections across sectors, industries and borders. 🤝

And this morning, we’re back at it for Day 2. More ideas, more encounters and more opportunities to turn our connection to the ocean into action.

This is what A’Pelago is all about: bringing the right people together to create what comes next.

The afternoon was where we got hands-on.

After lunch, A’Pelago Initiative 2026 moved into a series of Deep Dives, bringing together experts and practitioners to explore some of the biggest opportunities and challenges facing the Blue Economy!

Simultaneously, pre-booked 1-to-1 matchmaking meetings took place, creating space for more focused conversations, new connections and potential collaborations. 🤝

From Storytelling for Ocean & Business and Marine Materials to Decarbonising Shipping — three focused sessions designed for learning, discussion and exchange.

💡 13.00–14.00 | More Deep Dives
Explore Biodiversity & Nature Positive Measures, AI for Ocean and Blue Food — bringing together perspectives from research, business, technology and investment.

Then, at 14.00, we turn to the bigger picture:

⚙️ Industry, Capital & Collaboration
How do we innovate and scale ocean solutions in Finland and the Nordics? André Noël Chaker opened the session, followed by a deep dive into marine bio-based chemicals with Karoliina Joensuu and Mari Granström, and a panel on Corporate Venturing & Spin-offs.

🤝 At 15.00, Jonathan Hed and Annamari Arrakoski-Engardt, Ph.D explored how cross-sector alliances and foundations can accelerate systems change.

And then, we brought it back to where change ultimately begins: people.

Mikko Leskelä took the stage for Reflect & Make Change — a forward-looking perspective on leadership, responsibility and courage in transformation.

Last night, we gathered aboard Suomen Joutsen at Forum Marinum, one of Finland’s most iconic maritime landmarks, to welcome speakers, partners, investors and guests ahead of two inspiring days dedicated to innovation, collaboration and the future of our oceans. 🌊

💦 Meet our Nordic Blue 2026 startup: WAI Water Intelligence. WAI (which means water in Māori) has developed a portable water analysis system that enables anyone to collect high-quality water quality data directly in the field. Combined with a mobile app and cloud platform, every measurement is automatically geotagged and stored for mapping, modelling and better decision-making.

Today, most rivers, streams and agricultural drainage ditches are not monitored, leaving critical nutrient hotspots undiscovered. WAI makes it easy and affordable to collect thousands of in-situ measurements – building the evidence needed to reduce nutrient runoff, combat eutrophication, and better understand our waters from source to sea.

They are currently looking for:
⮕ Pilot partners in agriculture, water management, restoration and environmental monitoring
⮕ Research organizations, municipalities, NGOs and companies interested in collecting more water quality data
⮕ Impact investors and strategic partners advancing environmental monitoring and water intelligence

💧Meet our Nordic Blue 2026 startup: Just-measure is a Danish cleantech company working to make water quality easier to understand

They develop sensor-solutions with a digital platform that measure what’s in the water (like nitrate, phosphate, dissolved oxygen and turbidity) in real time. Instead of taking manual samples every now and then, you get continuous data and a clear overview.

Water quality is becoming a bigger challenge due to agricultural pollution, climate change, and stricter regulations. Many still rely on occasional testing, which can miss important changes. Real-time data makes it easier to react quickly, improve decisions, and meet environmental requirements.

They are currently looking for:
• Pilot partners who want to test our solutions in practice
• Utilities, municipalities, agricultural companies and more interested in better water data
• Partners and investors within cleantech and environmental solutions aiming for The Blue Economy
