Numerous credible intellectuals and respected professionals in their respective fields expressed interest when our coalition government issued the Board Membership Expression of Interest (EOI) in January 2023.

Two professional individuals close to a major party in the coalition govt invited me to express my interest, but I humbly declined as I was employed full-time in Canberra at the time.

I posted about that too.

Surprisingly, highly experienced professionals in the airline and aviation industry who expressed their interest were dismissed without proper consideration.

How about that?

Yes, I have been persistently addressing this injustice for the past three years.

In 2018, Unity Fiji received a total of 6,896 votes, increasing to 13,100 votes in the 2022 elections. Despite this rise in popularity, the 13,100 votes fell significantly short of the 26,696 votes required to meet the 5% threshold for securing a seat in parliament.

Similarly, the Labour Party, once a dominant political force, succumbed to Unity Fiji in the most recent elections.

In the last three elections, newly registered parties fell well short of the required 5% threshold. In my opinion, the same outcome is likely in the upcoming elections.

Therefore, it is important to choose wisely and ensure your vote counts.

Remain objective and focus on long-term goals. The biased electoral systemโ€™s Dโ€™Hondt method, which I strongly oppose, disproportionately benefits large, well-established political parties.

With the rise in the number of registered parties for the upcoming General Elections, it will be interesting to see how many manage to surpass the 5% threshold.

Clearly, the greater the number of parties contesting, the more the votes will be divided.

The 5% threshold refers to the minimum proportion of total valid votes cast nationwide that a political party or independent candidate must secure to be eligible for representation in Parliament. This requirement is stipulated in Section 53(3) of the 2013 Constitution.

๐‡๐จ๐ฐ ๐ข๐ญ ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐ฌ

Fiji employs a single nationwide constituency combined with an open-list proportional representation system. Prior to seat allocation, any party or independent candidate receiving less than 5% of the total valid votes is excluded from the process.

๐„๐ฑ๐š๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž

If 500,000 valid votes are cast in a general election:

500,000ร—5%=25,000

A party would need at least 25,000 votes nationwide to qualify for seats in Parliament.

Total Registered voters: 693,915.

Total Registered voters ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ž๐ง๐ญ on polling day: 473,910.

Total Registered voters ๐š๐›๐ฌ๐ž๐ง๐ญ on polling day: 220,005.

Savenaca Narube, with 6,845 votes, and Unity Fiji, with 13,100 votes, did not meet the threshold and consequently secured no seats.

Mahendra Chaudhry, with 5,760 votes, and the Fiji Labour Party, with 12,704 votes, failed meet the threshold and did not secure any seats.
