The Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF), as a rights-based organisation working closely with grassroots communities, believes that national discussions must remain grounded in the everyday realities, concerns and needs of ordinary Fijians.
Over the past two weeks, PRF has received several requests for assistance and heard concerns from individuals and communities facing challenges extending beyond waste management. These include requests for support with basic necessities, as well as concerns from young people and other community members experiencing anxiety and uncertainty about the country’s future.
These concerns highlight two important areas requiring attention: access to basic necessities and the emotional wellbeing of people navigating an uncertain period. In response, PRF is working with partners through community initiatives to help address immediate needs, including access to water through water tank support. PRF has also been listening to individuals who have expressed concerns about their circumstances and, where appropriate, referring them to specialist organisations such as the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) and others for further support and counselling.
As these concerns continue to emerge, PRF believes it is important that the wider national conversation does not lose sight of the people and communities experiencing these challenges firsthand.
