The Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) is taking its VAKA (Voices, Alliances, Knowledge and Action) Forum into Fiji’s faith communities, beginning with a dialogue with the Council of Churches, as part of a broader effort to build meaningful connections with religious organisations across different faiths on issues of recycling, environmental responsibility and community action.

The VAKA Forum brings together people and organisations to have open conversations about the challenges and opportunities facing Fiji’s recycling sector, recognising that meaningful change cannot come from one sector alone.

For PRF, engaging Fiji’s religious communities is an important part of that conversation.

Faith-based organisations have a strong presence within communities across Fiji and play an important role in shaping values, behaviours and community action. PRF believes this makes them an important part of the national conversation around how Fiji approaches recycling and the environment.

𝐅𝐢𝐣𝐢 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐍𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐥.

We stand in solidarity with the people of Nepal and all communities affected by the devastating floods.

On Sunday, 30 August, we received the devastating news through members of the CPR Alliance that several CPRs have lost their lives, remain missing, or have lost family members due to the severe flooding that has affected Nepal.

𝑹𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒍𝒐𝒔𝒕.
𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈.
𝑺𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒂𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒅.

We invite everyone who wishes to stand with Nepal to join us. Please wear white as a symbol of peace, remembrance and solidarity.

A Message Book will also be available at the vigil for everyone to share their messages, prayers and thoughts for the people of Nepal, particularly our fellow CPR communities. The messages collected will be passed on to the CPR Alliance in Nepal as a message of love, support and solidarity from the people of Fiji.

The Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) is raising concerns about accountability across Fiji’s waste management and recycling sectors, particularly as reported cases of illegal dumping continue to raise questions about what happens to materials after they are collected.

As more businesses and organisations engage companies to collect their recyclables, PRF believes there must be greater transparency and accountability to ensure that materials presented for recycling are actually handled, processed and recovered through genuine recycling pathways.

PRF has observed a growing need for greater clarity between waste collection services and genuine recycling operations. Collecting and transporting recyclable materials does not, on its own, constitute recycling. PRF is therefore encouraging businesses and organisations to carry out due diligence when selecting recycling providers, including requesting evidence of their recycling track record, processing systems and what ultimately happens to the materials collected.

The Pacific Recyclers Alliance claims its members are often left out of discussions on recycling and environmental policy, despite their work supporting communities and livelihoods.

As part of the Taveuni Waste Management Initiative, the Pacific Recycling Foundation team held a workshop with the Yalovata Cooperatives, focused on strengthening local capacity and supporting the community to take an active role in addressing waste management challenges on the island.
The discussions explored the importance of community ownership, collaboration, and practical solutions that can work within Taveuni's local context.

When communities are empowered with the knowledge, tools, and support to take action, meaningful change can take root and grow.

Representing PRF were Founder Amitesh Deo, Special Projects Manager John Wilson, Co-Lead and Assistant Projects Manager Shivanjali Singh, and Project Officers Aliyah Valentine and Kelevi Stark.

We look forward to continuing this journey alongside the people of Taveuni towards a sustainable island.
