Pacific Recycling Foundation is a rights-based organisation dedicated to bringing recycling to the forefront while providing structured support to the Collection Pillars of Recycling. Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) is a rights-based organization specially formed to raise awareness on recycling and to provide structured support to individuals or groups involved in informal waste picking in Fiji

and the Pacific (in particular women or members of the LGBTQI+ waste pickers involved in the collection of recyclables)

PRF’s key role is advocacy and awareness of recycling and the gender aspect of waste management. PRF believes that if the mindset and attitude changes toward recycling and waste pickers, there will be a positive change in the waste management landscape in Fiji. PRF has a research unit that focuses on best practice models for recycling and upcycling concepts, including collection systems for smaller outer islands. PRF was officially registered as a charitable trust in Fiji on May 24th, 2022, and founded by long-time environment enthusiast, recycling & human rights advocate Amitesh Deo. Prior to PRFs inception, recycling awareness and advocacy work was carried out by Waste Recyclers Fiji Ltd (WRFL) which is the commercial arm of the foundation. Since 1994, WRFL has played the role of a reliable and trusted recycler as well as a passionate advocate towards international best practices of recycling. In many essences, PRF is a reflection of all the struggles and challenges its commercial arm encountered for over 28 years at the time of its registration. PRF and WRFL has formed strong partnerships with key stakeholders to advance the role and objectives of the foundation.

Turning commitment into action.

The Pacific Recycling Foundation, Nauru Rehabilitation Corporation, and Nauru Shipping Line have formalised a partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at addressing Nauru's growing waste management challenges.

The partnership will explore practical recycling solutions, including reverse logistics opportunities to recover and transport recyclables, strengthen waste recovery systems, and reduce the amount of waste ending up in the environment.

Together, we are demonstrating how regional collaboration can drive meaningful environmental change and build a more sustainable future for the Pacific.

Building a stronger recycling movement across the Pacific.

The Pacific Recycling Foundation had the opportunity to meet with the Minister for Nauru Rehabilitation Corporation (NRC), Hon. Reagan Winson Aliklik, to discuss a shared vision for advancing recycling and sustainable waste management in Nauru.

The discussions explored opportunities for collaboration between PRF and NRC to establish meaningful recycling initiatives that create environmental, social, and economic impact, supported by the commitment to grassroots solutions.

Together, we are taking important steps towards a more resilient Pacific.

A victory for our environment!

As grassroots recyclers we welcome the decision by the Ministry of Environment to reject the proposed Environmental Impact Assement Report for the Waste-to-Energy project in Vuda and this is a victory for Fiji's environment, it's land and it's people.

We thank the Minister, Hon. Lynda Tabuya and the Permanent Secretary, Dr Sivendra Michael, for their fair and responsible leadership. The decision also reinforces the importance of waste management solutions that recognise the critical role of Collection Pillars of Recycling and grassroots recyclers in Fiji's recycling systems.

Join us this Saturday at our Annual Roadside Campaign along the Nadi Airport to Nasoso Road Junction stretch as we celebrate this victory and continue standing in solidarity for our environment.

At the Pacific Recycling Foundation, we believe that everyone has a right to a clean environment.

That is why we are incredibly proud and recognize our own recycling advocate Jashona Wilson, who participated in the two day Veivueti Kids Ocean Conference at the International School Suva this week representing her class and school among her other peers of Veiuto Primary School.

Jashona's realization of environment injustice at the age of 8, demonstrates her passion for protecting our environment and oceans. Her participation is a reminder that when young people are given opportunities to learn, engage, and speak up for causes they believe in, they can become young advocates for positive change.

Jashona has been part of PRF's environmental advocacy journey since she was 5 years old.

As we celebrate Jashona's achievement, we are also reminded of the importance of shaping young minds from an early age. The future of our environment will depend on the actions, values, and leadership of our people and our land.

Congratulations, Jashona and thank you for continuing to inspire us through your commitment to protecting our environment and oceans. We also acknowledge the teachers Ms. Tuiwainunu and Mrs. Naiyaga for preparing Jashona and her colleagues in the lead up to the Veivueti Kids Ocean Conference.

We also invite you to join Jashona at this years annual roadside campaign to celebrate World Oceans and World Environment Day in Nadi this Saturday 6th June.
