THE Coalition Governmentโs upcoming National Economic Summit has attracted more than $150,000 in sponsorship, says Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
He said this in a statement yesterday where he also clarified that the $360,000 estimated budget for the summit was approved by Cabinet on the understanding that the Finance Ministry would seek sponsorship to minimise costs.
Mr Rabuka also said the actual cost would be less than half the budgeted figure.
โI am sure that the summit, attended by over 500 participants, will cost less than half the estimated figure for a national event of this magnitude,โ he said.
โThe Deputy PM and Minister of Finance (Professor Biman Prasad) has confirmed that the summit has attracted significant financial sponsorship of over $150,000.
โI am sure the Deputy PM will provide to the nation the final expenditure or the actual cost of the event in the near future.
โThe peopleโs Coalition Government firmly believes in transparency and accountability and that is why Government is upfront in the use of taxpayersโ funds.
โThe announcement of estimated budgets for the National Economic Summit and the Girmit Day and Ratu Sukuna Day celebrations, is in conformity with this principle.โ
Mr Rabuka was responding to scathing criticism from some Fijians on social media and leader of the Opposition and other political parties over the $360,000 budget.
Fijians questioned the need to spend $32,700 on hosting the two day event at the Grand Pacific Hotel, $115,000 for morning and afternoon tea and lunch for 500 participants, $15,000 for a cocktail, $18,700 for kalavata and $11,390.50 for summit bags, especially at a time the country was sinking in debt and many were struggling to put food on the table.
