💰 CURRENT MINIMUM WAGE
Fiji’s national minimum wage is $5.00 per hour, effective 1 April 2025.
The Government is reviewing it. $8 per hour is a proposed living wage, not the current legal minimum.
🚌 COUNT YOUR TRANSPORT COSTS
Example:
You earn $50 for 8 hours = $6.25 per hour.
If bus fares cost $10, you take home $40
Before accepting a job, ask:
- How many hours will I work?
- How much will I be paid?
- What will transport cost?
- Is lunch or travel between workplaces covered?
- Are extra hours paid?
Look at what it costs you to earn the money.
📝 ASK FOR A CONTRACT
If you work regularly, ask for written terms covering:
- Pay and working hours
- Duties and workdays
- Overtime and payment dates
- Leave and notice
- Allowances and expenses
🚨 YOU HAVE RIGHTS
Being a nanny, caregiver or cleaner does not make your work less valuable.
You provide time, skills, care and responsibility.
💵 KNOW YOUR WORTH
Ask:
✅ “What is the hourly rate?”
✅ “What are the hours and duties?”
✅ “Where is the workplace?”
✅ “Is transport covered?”
✅ “Can we put this in writing?”
You are not asking for charity. You are asking to be paid fairly.
Know your rate, hours, transport costs and rights. Keep records. Ask for a contract.
