Participatory approaches are critical to community development in the Fijian context, as they resonate with indigenous systems of governance and locally grounded forms of knowledge production.

The Vanua methodology, or Vanua Research Framework, first articulated in academic discourse by Professor (Dr) Unaisi Nabobo-Baba, underscores the enduring significance of traditional practices, customary land tenure, and communal modes of decision-making. These sociocultural structures are not merely symbolic but constitute the foundation through which communities interpret and organise their lived realities.

By engaging these frameworks, participatory approaches create space for community members to define their own needs and priorities, ensuring that development initiatives are culturally embedded, socially legitimate, and responsive to local contexts.

Nineteen women from the ‘Soqosoqo ni Marama e Vunuku’ in the Province of Rewa, participated in a Community Needs Assessment Workshop facilitated by Bridging the Gap Fiji on Tuesday 24th March.

As the central actors within Vunuku’s social structure, these women occupy critical roles in social reproduction, household economies, and the intergenerational transmission of traditional knowledge. They are not only caregivers and knowledge holders, but also key agents of community transformation and resilience.

Through a participatory and community-led process, the women collectively articulated the structural and socio-economic constraints that shape their everyday realities. More importantly, they also identified existing local assets and resources that can be mobilised into sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Together, they mapped out short-, medium-, and long-term development pathways, grounded in their aspirations for economic resilience and self-determination.

The insights shared enabled Bridging the Gap Fiji to align their identified needs and goals with relevant development programs, funding mechanisms, and capacity-building opportunities.

We will continue to support the group through:
✔ Business plan development
✔ Application and proposal writing
✔ Facilitating access to targeted training—including skills development and improved mushroom cultivation techniques

A follow-up visit will ensure that these capacity-building needs are met, strengthening both individual capabilities and collective agency.

This engagement marks an important step in an ongoing process of community empowerment and inclusive development.

Bridging the Gap Fiji remains committed to working alongside rural and under-served communities—bridging informational divides and expanding access to development opportunities.

📍Vunuku Village, Rewa Province |24|06|2026|

Yesterday, was our very first community consultation, and it was with the Vunuku Women’s Group - Soqosoqo ni Marama e Vunuku, ena yasana vakaturaga o Rewa.

The journey there felt like a story in motion. As we traveled by dinghy, we passed through stretches of breathtaking mangroves — tall, steady, and full of life. There was a quiet strength about them, as if they carry the stories of generations shaped by hard work, resilience, and determination.

In many ways, they reflect the spirit of the people of Vunuku — a community that continues to adapt and thrive in the modern world, while holding firmly to the identity and cultural practices that have defined them for generations.

Grateful for the warm welcome, and for the opportunity to listen, learn, and connect.
