Participatory approaches are critical to community development in the Fijian context, as they resonate with indigenous systems of governance and locally grounded forms of knowledge production.
The Vanua methodology, or Vanua Research Framework, first articulated in academic discourse by Professor (Dr) Unaisi Nabobo-Baba, underscores the enduring significance of traditional practices, customary land tenure, and communal modes of decision-making. These sociocultural structures are not merely symbolic but constitute the foundation through which communities interpret and organise their lived realities.
By engaging these frameworks, participatory approaches create space for community members to define their own needs and priorities, ensuring that development initiatives are culturally embedded, socially legitimate, and responsive to local contexts.
