Before he played Rahim on "Love, Victor", Anthony Keyvan asked his own father what it meant to be q***r in a Muslim family. The answer was that it is forbidden - not merely unspoken, but something you can be persecuted for, and something that is illegal in a lot of the countries those families come from.

He took the part anyway. Rahim was one of the first gay Iranian Muslim characters on an American network, and Keyvan was clear-eyed about why that mattered. Love, Simon, he pointed out, was about a white boy coming out, and it was "relatively easy in the grand scheme of things."

Then q***r Iranians began writing to him from Iran, where being who they are is against the law. "These are my people," he said, "and my people are hurting."

Keyvan turns 26 today. What he says he got out of playing Rahim is simpler than any of it: he got to show people you don't have to be white to be loved.
