It was a huge privilege to deliver my talk, for who don't identify as 'business people', at the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading - CIEP conference last week.

We whizzed around the wheels of business and life and asked ourselves what we really want. You know, when nobody else is chipping in their opinion and we're not comparing ourselves with others and feeling like we should be doing what they're doing.

🤔 What do we actually want our businesses to look like?

🤔 How can we build them so that they enable us to live the lives that we want?

🤔 What questions do we need to ask and answer so that we can start to make change?

In the process we dipped our toes in:

Just what exactly does a do?

They're not engaged at the sentence level. They're usually working on a manuscript before the spelling, punctuation and grammar is checked at the copyediting stage.

They may be asked to:

✅ Research potential titles

✅ Write book proposals and content outlines

✅ Research information to fill content gaps

✅ Develop manuscripts before they are submitted to a publisher for acceptance

✅ Develop manuscripts after the author has submitted their finished version

✅ Write editorial reports

In doing this they will check that information is appropriate for the intended reader and provide advice to help the author convey their key points most effectively.

I'm thrilled to have qualified as a Certified Business Strategist.

I've learned so much by taking the course. I'm looking forward to developing my own business using the skills I've learned and helping others to do the same.

As , we often forget that we are owners of an actual business. The skills and approaches that apply to multinational companies can be applied to our own businesses as well, sometimes with a little tweaking of mindset along the way.

Developmental editing is possibly the least known colour in the editorial spectrum.

It is not a process that focuses on spelling, grammar and punctuation. We're not operating at the sentence level here.

Instead, we're taking a deep dive into the elements of the text that form the skeleton... the structure that everything else hangs off.

💭 Perhaps some background information is missing that the reader would find useful.

💭 Maybe the tone is wrong or too much background knowledge is being assumed.

💭 Is the text structured in a way that makes sense and that allows the 'story' being told to develop (this is as true for non-fiction as for fiction)?

💭 What exactly is the key point that the author is trying to make anyway? How can they be helped to make it so clear and persuasive that the reader is left in no doubt about the core message?

It's intellectually challenging and deeply satisfying, and I love it.

Some projects are simple and straightforward, others are enormous in scope and involve a large number of stakeholders.

I spent the final third of last year pretty much exclusively working on Volume 131 of the International Agency for Research on Cancer Monographs.

Each monograph is a detailed synthesis of all of the available evidence relating to whether or not a substance (or substances) are carcinogenic, concluding with the opinion of a panel of expert scientists. They are meticulously compiled, incredibly detailed and every word is scrutinised for its accuracy.

Congratulations to everyone involved in the publication of Volume 131. I've learned things I never thought I'd know about weapons-grade tungsten, cobalt and antimony compounds.
