We do a wide variety of ‘things’ to support our clients…not all pleasant! Today’s ‘grotty’ job was replacing a cooker hood filter which had not been touched in decades. Everything was very sticky and dripping in grease. It took a lot of very hot water and detergent but I got it looking and functioning a lot better in the end.

A big thank you to everyone in our team who has been working hard this week to keep our clients hydrated and cool. From flannels in the fridge to feet in water, they have done a great job keeping everybody and everything up together In difficult conditions. Hopefully this is the last day of the extreme heat. Keep safe, everybody.

Getting out and leaving anxieties at home is important for all of us, especially as we get older and have more time for those worries to grow. Today’s visit with one of our clients with dementia was spent visiting Brown’s Folly, then having refreshments at The Crown in Bathford, then off for more strolling and nature along the river at Batheaston. A lovely chilled afternoon where we could forget our worries for a while.

We aim to get clients out and about as much as possible, not only to do chores and for a change of scene, but also because it stimulates memory and conversation and vitamin D (which helps muscles, bones, the immune system, brain cells and your mood) is important for all of us. My client this morning hadn’t been to the Bishop’s Palace in years. She enjoyed the wildlife and people-watching and was able to talk about her memories of going there in the past. She got exercise and even met a relative who she had pretty much lost touch with. A successful outing all round and we still had time to change her bed and wash and hang out the set we took off.

Friends Indeed are looking for caring people to help support our lovely clients at weekends in Bath. Visits are not rushed and although we offer a lot of practical help and support to our clients, we are very keen to enhance lives in any way that we can.

Required...

* Compassionate nature,
* Plenty of common sense and life experience,
* A reliable car

No personal care involved.

The rate of pay is £15.80 per hour.

Friends Indeed are looking for a kindhearted male companion/home help with life experience and a practical, caring nature to join our fantastic team in Wells. This is a part-time position and could be anything from 4-10 hours per week on days to suit you (including a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday). We only ask that you can offer the same days and times each week so that you can visit the same clients each week and build trusting relationships with them. You must be able to drive and have a reliable car to take clients out in.

Despite the heat today, we have still been getting out and about safely with clients. A beautiful early trip to Kilver Court Gardens, with one client, then refreshments at the Rodneystoke Inn with another and finishing up with a walk along the beautifully shady Norton Radstock Greenway, listening to the birdsong and enjoying a pause in the cool by the river with my third. All pleased to escape their 4 walls and a little fresh air and nature did us the world of good.

As well as doing the chores, I managed to get 2 out of 3 of my clients out and about today in the nice weather. A trip to Cheddar Garden Centre where we enjoyed watching some children feed the Koi Carp and a lovely walk through Wells window shopping and people watching. Some good exercise and a change of scene for them both. My 3rd client is just out of hospital so not ready to go out yet, but we are working on getting her back on her feet.

Are you in the Wells area and would you like to provide some support and practical help to older people in your community?

If so, Friends Indeed are looking for great people who are available for between 6-10 hours each week to support their lovely clients in the local area.

The type of things we help with are...

• Light cleaning & housekeeping
• Shopping & errands
• Cooking & meal preparation
• Getting people out and about
• Taking clients to appointments
• Support after stay in hospital
• Respite for family carers
• Help with admin
• Garden maintenance
• Companionship

We don't provide personal care.

Necessary requirements:

• A car
• Life experience
• Practical and caring nature
• A genuine interest in people and helping to enhance lives

All of our companions hold an enhanced DBS certificate which we can arrange.

Hours are usually between 9am and 5pm. You can choose how many hours and which days you do, but they must be regular each week.
