Orkney has always done things differently, from the Neolithic through the Norse era to the present day. Exploring its main island, strewn with ancient monuments, you can step back in time

Orkney’s history has always set it apart, furnishing it with its own proud cultural reference points. Its prehistoric past saw it flourish as a major social and ceremonial centre, the influence of which likely extended across all Neolithic Britain. In the Viking Age it became a bastion of Norse culture, located at a major crossroads of sea travel and trading routes, and it remained a territory of the Kingdom of Norway until 1472. Later it was the hub of the lucrative 18th-century kelp-harvesting industry, and later still, Britain’s key naval base during both World Wars.

My watercolour illustrated map of Hotel Café Royal, London, followed the brief for a charming, artistic interpretation of this historic landmark nestled between Mayfair, Soho, and St. James’s. Rendered in soft washes of watercolour, the map captures the hotel’s striking Regency architecture on Regent Street, highlighting its central, iconic location.

Beyond the hotel itself Idepict the vibrant surrounding streets, with tiny painted details of famous shops, theatres, and local landmarks. This unique style infuses the utility of a map with a sense of romantic, old-world elegance, reflecting the glamour and distinguished history of the venue, which once hosted figures like Oscar Wilde and David Bowie. It’s a delightful, collectible piece of London artistry.

Have been thinking about Islands this last week and maybe I should visit more of our Uk Islands. Such as St Mary’s is the largest and most populous island in the Isles of Scilly, off the coast of Cornwall. It is the main transport hub, with the airport and harbour at Hugh Town, the archipelago’s capital. The island features beautiful white-sand beaches, ancient sites like Star Castle at the Garrison, and diverse coastal and moorland walking trails.
