⚠️ Understanding COSHH: Protect Your Workforce from Harmful Substances ⚠️

As Health and Safety consultants, we often see businesses overlook one of the most crucial aspects of workplace safety—proper management of hazardous substances. The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations are in place to ensure the health and well-being of your employees when working with chemicals, dust, and other potentially dangerous substances.

What COSHH Covers:
🔸 Chemicals
🔸 Fumes, dust, vapours, and mists
🔸 Biological agents like bacteria and viruses
🔸 Workplace by-products like fumes from welding

Why COSHH Matters:
Failure to comply with COSHH regulations can result in serious health issues such as skin diseases, respiratory problems, or long-term illnesses. Not only does this put your employees at risk, but it also leads to costly legal and operational consequences for your business.

What You Should Be Doing:

✅Risk Assessment – Identify hazardous substances in your workplace and assess their risks.
✅Control Measures – Implement measures to minimise exposure, such as proper ventilation, PPE, or using safer alternatives.
✅Training – Ensure that your employees understand the risks and know how to handle substances safely.
✅Regular Monitoring – Regularly check control measures and maintain records to ensure ongoing compliance.

💡 Need Help with COSHH Compliance?
As specialists in Health and Safety, Essential Safety Management can help you conduct thorough risk assessments, train your staff, and ensure your business is fully compliant with COSHH regulations. Don’t wait until an accident happens—act now to protect your workforce!

Feel free to reach out if you need assistance with your COSHH risk assessments or training programs.

Well I think we can finally say summer has hit the UK!

Whilst we are all glad of the sunshine, workers who are exposed to extreme heat or work in hot environments may be at risk of 'heat stress'.

What is 'Heat Stress..?'
Heat stress happens when the body's way of controlling its internal temperature starts to fail. As well as air temperature, factors such as work rate, humidity and work clothing may lead to heat stress.

As an employer what is required..?
Employers must identify the factors that can cause heat stress, this can be done by a workplace audit being carried out alongside talking with exposed workers. Once the risk factors have been identified, it's then time to create the action plan to either eliminate or reduce the risks depending on the likelihood and severity from them.

There are a number of effective control measures that can be implemented to reduce the risk factor but it's all about finding the ones that are most effective at your place of work.

Contact us Today on 024 7601 2642 where one of our consultants can advise the best way to prevent Heat stress in your workplace.

Are you in the Manufacturing Industry, working with 'Metal Working Fluids'..?

Exposure to metalworking fluids – also referred to as ‘white water’ – can cause harm to the lungs and unprotected skin.

Failure to implement the appropriate control measures could lead to serious Ill-health within the workplace, also resulting in enforcement notices being issued with the potential of all work being prohibited.

The manufacturing industry has been found to have a substantially higher rate than 'average' for occupational asthma due to the lack of control measures implemented by Employers.
Without suitable and sufficient Risk assessments, audits and inspections being carried out, the controls necessary can't even begin to be put in place.

Essential Safety Management can do all of this for you right from the very first audit & inspection through to the implementation of all suitable controls needed. We review all of your current business Health & Safety documentation and supply any new documentation that is found to be needed no matter what this may be. Leaving your business and employees a safer workplace for all.

Contact us TODAY to arrange a completely FREE Initial Inspection carried out by one of our competent consultants to see if you are doing all you can to protect your workforce.
