One of the most overlooked workplace skills is knowing when you’re not ready for a conversation.

Sometimes it’s as simple as saying, “Can we come back to this when I can give it the attention it deserves?”

By recognizing you’re not in the best place to engage fully in that moment, you create space for both parties to let emotions pass, and return to the conversation from a calmer, more grounded position.

In this clip, .mcgaharan and Cornelius Lee talk about how to advocate for yourself when you feel rushed into receiving feedback, and the power dynamics that can occur when trying to set boundaries.

When we expect challenge, criticism, or discomfort before entering a conversation, we often arrive ready to defend ourselves.

A a more useful approach is to walk in expecting to learn something.

It may not make feedback easy to receive, but it will make growth more likely.

That’s a far better result for everyone involved.

In this clip, .mcgaharan and Cornelius Lee discuss how to prepare for and anticipate feedback when going into a conversation that is ultimately designed to make you better at what you do.

Feedback doesn’t land the same way for everyone.

Some of us shut down.
Some of us get defensive.
Some avoid the conversation altogether.

The better you understand how you react under pressure, the easier it becomes to stay open when it matters most.

In this clip, Cornelius shares his top techniques on how he helps leaders understand their fight, flight, or freeze responses when receiving feedback.

What’s been your go-to response when receiving feedback?

Most of us like to think we’re open to receiving feedback…

Until it touches on something we’re sensitive about.

That’s where self-awareness comes in to play.

It allows you to recognize what’s been triggered, so you can quickly get back to listening, learning, and moving forward with the conversation.

In this clip, Cornelius breaks down the concept of your “inner guard dog” and why it’s important to know how to handle it when receiving feedback in the moment.

Good listening doesn’t always mean keeping your thoughts to yourself.

Sometimes a simple observation, shared with care, can open up a much more honest conversation you wouldn’t have otherwise had.

In this clip, .mcgaharan and discuss how using your own judgement can be helpful in coaching, and knowing how to use it in a way that allows the other person to clarify their own thinking.

Most of us listen while quietly preparing a response in our minds before the other person is done speaking.

Listening with genuine curiosity asks something different of us.

It asks us to strip away any judgements or premature solutions, to allow for what’s really going on to come to the surface.

That small shift changes the quality of a conversation more than most people realise!

In this clip, speaks how our natural tendencies to judge or make assumptions when listening to someone can ultimately stifle the curiosity needed to figure out what the person in front of us is actually trying to say.

One of the most underrated leadership skills is knowing what someone actually needs from you.

Not every conversation needs advice.
Not every person needs coaching.

Sometimes people simply need space to think out loud.

Other times they want a direct answer based on your experience.

The real skill is resisting the urge to jump in too quickly, and listening well enough to know what’s needed in the moment.

In this clip, .mcgaharan and discuss the finer details of what good coaching looks like, and how to use individual circumstances as a way to sharpen your coaching skills.
