I am starting to see a significant crack down on Country of Origin misstatements on US imports.

USCBP are actively hiring a new wave of auditors and the number of audits are increasing with country of origin being of focus. If you are not 100% sure and are not audit proof on the difference between country of origin and country of export I'd strongly advise getting outside support.

Unfortunately Country of Origin is not a mandatory data element for US import declarations and according to ACE CATAIR when the origin is unknown, the placeholder ** (double asterix) can be used. When thats done then the Country of Export becomes mandatory!

The inherent risk is that the Country of Export gets transmitted downstream, is easily misinterpreted by brokers and platforms and leads to an incorrect duty rate.

Dont get caught out by lazy declarations. These will trigger duty reclaims, bigger audits and worse, potential fines!
