Lindisfarne Mead News, Deals, Competitions and general communication with customers and fans of Lindisfarne Mead. The worlds finest mead.

Lindisfarne Mead is a unique alcoholic fortified wine manufactured here on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. The honey which is used in the production of Lindisfarne Mead is drawn from the four corners of the world and here, on the island, it is vatted with fermented grape juice, honey, herbs, and the pure natural water of an artesian well and fortified with fine spirits to produce this unique drink

. Lindisfarne Mead is produced exclusively on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, situated off the Northumbrian Coast. This island is the "Cradle of Christianity" in England, for in the year 634 A.D., Oswald, King of Northumberland, brought St. Aidan from the island of Iona to establish a monastery here. The motifs illuminating our labels are drawn from Bishop Eadfrith's magnificient Lindisfarne Gospels written circa 700 AD., which, with the Books of Durrow and Kells, remain a living testimony to the devotion and love of beauty and culture which existed in those distant times. Situated in the centre of the village, just off the village green. The Winery Showroom which has been open to the public since 1968 attracts over 200,000 visitors per annum from all over the world. The Priory is now in ruins yet much of the original beautiful Norman arches and pillars are preserved, and the Brew House, which was used by the monks can still be seen.

It was so lovely for to take time to pop into our store in Alnwick while filming in the town. Jason has appeared in many hit TV shows over the years including Casualty, Emmerdale, Cutting it and Waterloo Road. Lovely man, we had a nice chat and he picked up a few local products to enjoy 🎬 ☺️

Thrift, also known as Sea Pink, is probably the most iconic flower of Holy Island.
It grows on sand dunes, on shingle and is most commonly found on the causeway salt marshes.

Thrift (Armeria maritima) is one of our maritime plants that’s very well adapted to living in a salt-laden environment. The name thrift comes from the fact that it can grow in really harsh places, in shallow and nutrient-poor soils, with very little fresh water available. Its narrow, waxy leaves cluster closely together in a clump to conserve water.
It’s a short tufted perennial, growing in clumps with compact flowers forming round pink balls. These flowers appear on top of leafless stalks that can reach up to 30cm high, growing from clumps of linear leaves – the impression is of a green cushion of leaves with pink pom-poms on green stalks.
Thrift was also used in some traditional medicinal remedies. The roots were sliced, boiled in milk and used to treat tuberculosis in Orkney several centuries ago. The dried flower was considered to have antibiotic properties and was used in the treatment of obesity, some nervous disorders and urinary infections.
