Professional Foundation: Worked as a railroad engineer, fireman, and ship mechanic. These roles provided firsthand insight into transportation and electrical problems.

Independence: Self-taught in electrical engineering; moved to Cincinnati and later NYC to capitalize on urban industrialization.

Key Inventions & Contributions

In 1884, he co-founded Woods Electric Company. His 60+ patents focused on three core sectors:

Railway Safety: Developed the Synchronous Multiplex Railway Telegraph (1887), allowing moving trains to communicate with stations, drastically reducing collisions.

Urban Transit: Patented Third Rail systems and power collection methods for electric streetcars.

Communications: Improved telephone transmitters for clearer voice transmission and developed induction telegraphy.

Mechanical Efficiency: Invented an improved Steam Boiler Furnace and contributed to automatic air brake systems.
