As Theodore Roosevelt once said… we live in a society where comparison to others has become the norm. Too fat, too thin, not as successful, not as beautiful, need I go on?
For some children comparing themselves to others who they see as more able, cleverer, quicker or smarter means the joy they should feel about learning something new and the opportunity that learning brings is dulled, often resulting in the learning process feeling like a chore. The joy has been stolen away before it had a chance to take seed and grow. Children should be confident in their ability to have a go, to try something new, to take on a challenge and ultimately to compare themselves only to what THEY could be capable of. They are their own bench mark, their own barometer of what’s achievable. With constructive support and nurturing encouragement they can achieve more than they first believe. Let’s remember we’re all individuals, different strokes of a brush colouring this world. Don’t let comparison steal their joy! 👩🏼🏫
