Did you know...⬇️⬇️⬇️

From April 2026, you can claim 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles in a car or van, up from 45p.

The increase was backdated to the start of the tax year, so if you've been driving for work since April, you're already owed the higher rate.

Here's the full picture for 2026/27:⬇️⬇️⬇️

🚗 Cars and vans, first 10,000 miles: 55p per mile (up from 45p)
🚗 Cars and vans, after 10,000 miles: 25p per mile (unchanged)
🏍️ Motorbikes: 24p per mile (unchanged)
🚲 Bicycles: 20p per mile (unchanged, employees only)

If you're clocking up the miles, it adds up quickly. Over 10,000 miles, that's an extra £1,000 in your pocket compared to last year.

And that's worth having!

Phew - a heatwave ahead for this week 🔥☀️☀️

But up here in Scotland it's just that bit fresher, which suits us all at ACG 😎🆒

While everyone else fans themselves with last quarter's invoices, we're cool, calm, and very much getting on with it.

Here's the thing about running a small business:⬇️⬇️

😎It doesn't pause for the weather.

😎The VAT deadline doesn't care that it's 32 degrees.

😎Your cash flow doesn't take a summer holiday.

Whether things are ticking along nicely or you've got a few financial challenges you'd rather not think about, stay cool and stay hydrated. 💧

When you're ready to grow your business, heatwave or no heatwave, we're here to help you plan and reach your goals.

Your first quarterly MTD submission is due on 7th August.

Getting it right sets the scene for every other one to come.

➡️Here’s our advice: Get your categories right, your records right, and your software set up properly, so that every quarter after that follows the same pattern.

➡️If you’re not sure about the process, it’s worth getting an accountant involved before your first submission. A bit of support at the start is considerably more cost-effective, in time, money, and headspace, than fixing things further down the line.

Want a hand to get your first submission sorted? We're happy to talk it through.

Send us a message or call us ☎️ 01250 398004.

It's a question we get asked A LOT!

Choosing your business structure is one of the first big decisions you'll make as a self-employed person. (And we're here to help you).

Here's a quick look at how the two main options actually compare ⬇️

✅Legal status: As a sole trader, you and your business are the same legal entity. With a limited company, they're separate.

✅Personal liability: This is the big one. Sole traders have unlimited liability. If the business runs into financial trouble, your personal assets (property, savings, investments) could be at risk. Limited company owners have limited liability, meaning their liability is capped at what they've invested in the business.

✅Admin: Sole traders keep things simple: records, an annual Self Assessment, and Making Tax Digital compliance if you earn over £50,000. Limited companies face considerably more: Companies House registration, annual accounts, a confirmation statement, Corporation Tax returns, payroll if you take a salary, and statutory record-keeping.

The Takeaway: ➡️Being a sole trader gives you simplicity and speed. ➡️A limited company gives you protection and structure, at the cost of more admin.

Neither is 'better.'

It depends on several factors, such as your goals and how much time you want to spend on paperwork versus building your business.

We've shared a quick version of ‘what’s what'. For a more in-depth chat about what would be best for you and your business, send us a message or call us ☎️ 01250 398004.

It's Men's Health Week 🙋‍♂️🏌️‍♂️🕺

As we head towards Father's Day, we urge our male clients, readers, family, and friends to be aware of and take care of their health.

🔥In other words, Prioritise Your Health.🔥

😊As you know, one of our favourite ACG sayings is... 'No Health, No Wealth.'

➡️We need to talk about your health, not least because of the crazy, fast-paced world we live in with all the pressures and responsibilities.

We encourage you to speak out if you're struggling!

Small steps can make a big difference. Take a few minutes out of your busy day to⬇️⬇️⬇️

✅Schedule a health check-up. Routine screenings, such as blood pressure, cholesterol, and prostate exams, can help detect potential health concerns early on, enabling timely intervention and treatment.
✅Plan some exercise - if you don't already.
✅Start a conversation about mental health - in the workplace, community or between friends.

🔥The one thing NOT to do is ignore symptoms such as🔥

➡️Chest pain
➡️Shortness of breath
➡️Unexplained weight loss (or weight gain)
➡️Ongoing fatigue
➡️Changes in mood or behaviour
➡️Lumps or unusual changes in the body
➡️Changes in your urine or bowel movements

This week and every week, a reminder from Team ACG to prioritise your physical and mental health. 👏👏👏

It's World Gin Day 😊

And it's no secret the Bossman is partial to a restorative G & T after a long day in The Shed!

He's been known to sample some of the delicious Scottish Gins close to home from Persie Gin Distillery, as well as the odd Spanish Larios.

With so many on the market to choose from - what's your favourite Gin?

Ever had to try to sort out a problem with an employee’s salary?

Ouch!

Here are some research figures from The Global Payroll Association for you. They recently surveyed 4,248 UK employees, all paid via PAYE, asking whether they'd ever received an incorrect payment from their current employer.

🔥25% said yes.

Of those:

✅78% had been paid too little

✅19% had been paid too much

✅3% hadn't been paid at all

And it wasn't always a one-off. 46% said they'd experienced incorrect pay more than once.

So what's causing these errors?

➡️Human error (46%)

➡️Incorrect bonuses or overtime (29%)

➡️Wrong benefit or deduction calculations (11%)

➡️Incorrect reporting of taxable compensation (5%)

➡️Payroll software errors (5%)

➡️New starters missing their first paycheque (2%)

➡️Improper disability or other deductions (1%)

Looking at the figures shows us that nearly half of all payroll mistakes come down to human error. That's A LOT!

Which… raises the question: how confident are you in your current payroll process?

If you’re struggling, send us a message and let’s chat about how we can help.

Yesterday, we shared information on business insurance - you can't be without it!

Today, we're looking at the difference between Public Liability and Employers Liability.⬇️

Two types of insurance. One important distinction.

It's common for business owners to bundle employers' liability and public liability, but they cover very different situations.

The simplest way to think about it is like this:⬇️⬇️

✅ Someone inside your business makes a claim - that's employers' liability territory.
✅ Someone outside your business makes a claim - that's public liability.

Here's a simple breakdown ⬇️⬇️⬇️

✅Employers' liability covers you if an employee suffers a work-related injury or illness. And if you have employees, including temps, freelancers, volunteers, or trainees, you're legally required to have it.

At least £5 million worth. Skip it, and you're looking at fines of up to £2,500 per day.🧟‍♀️

✅Public liability covers you if a client or member of the public claims your business caused them injury or property damage. It's not usually a legal requirement, but depending on your contracts or your industry, it might as well be.

Not sure if you need one or both?

Well, the short answer: if you have anyone working for you in any capacity, employers' liability isn't optional.

Public liability is worth a serious look if you ever interact with clients or the public.

As we said yesterday, protect everything you've worked to build. And if you have questions, send us a message or give us a call.

Business Insurance🔥

As business owners, we have to have it.

What type you need depends on how your business works. Here are some guidelines. ⬇️

✅Public liability insurance - if you work with clients or the public.

✅Professional indemnity - if you offer advice, handle data or deliver a professional service.

✅Employers' Liability Insurance isn't optional - it's a legal requirement even if you have only one employee.

Unexpected situations arise, so getting this right means making sure all you work for doesn't come crashing down around you.

Make sure to know what you're covered for. 😊
