Spent this morning at AS Colour in Leeds.

The question I get asked most by new clothing brands is “can I see the garments before I commit?” Fair enough — weight and hand feel are the two things you can’t judge from a screen.
So anyone launching a brand with us can now come into the Leeds store with me and go through the full collection in person. Weekend appointments too, since most founders have a day job.

Thirty years in Bradford textiles and it still surprises me how many people order garments they’ve never held.

Anyone else find customers want to see and feel before they buy, or is that just apparel

Spent this morning at AS Colour in Leeds.

The question I get asked most is “can I see the garments before I commit?” Fair enough — weight and hand feel are the two things you can’t judge from a screen.

So we’ve sorted something out. If you’re launching a brand with us, we can now take you into the Leeds store and go through the full collection in person. Pick the pieces up, compare the weights, see the colours properly.

From a 180gsm staple tee through to a 500gsm hood — the heaviest garment we supply, and closer to outerwear than a hoodie in the hand.
Then we take their label out and stitch yours in.

Weekend appointments available if that suits you better.

A founder emailed me last week asking for DTF. He wanted it, he said, because it's the one where the print becomes part of the fabric.

He had it backwards. Nearly everyone does.

DTF is a printed film, bonded onto the surface with adhesive. Thin and soft, but it's a layer sitting on top of the cloth. Water-based screen print is ink pushed down into the fibres — that's the one that actually becomes part of the garment.

They wear out differently too. Screen prints crack with age. DTF fades but stays flexible, and holds up around 40–50 washes when it's pressed properly.

For most fashion brands that's absolutely fine. But his customers are grapplers, washing kit after every single session. Those are the buyers who'd notice.

So I quoted him screen print — the dearer option, and the right one.
