We had an amazing week with Nigel Tyas, the Sheffield based Yorkshire blacksmith who founded Nigel Tyas Ironwork in 2000. He came to visit the forge to help guide the intricacies of making his beautiful designer lighting. It was a pleasure for everyone to spend quality time together to learn from a master craftsman who is happily passing on skills to the next generation of blacksmiths.

A commission Nigel had whilst he was still at the anvil were these particular Shepherd's Crook chandeliers; which are available in a variety of sizes. The last image shows these stunning works of art hanging proudly in Leeds Castle; a fitting place for them.

Did you know that today’s wall lights have a history stretching back hundreds of years?

The word "sconce" comes from terms meaning protection and shelter, originally referring to fixtures designed to shield a flame from wind while safely illuminating a room. In medieval homes, sconces were practical wall-mounted candle holders, often crafted from iron or wood. As technology evolved through gas lighting and then electricity, so did the humble sconce.

Today’s wall lights may feature cutting-edge LEDs and contemporary designs, but they still serve the same essential purpose as their ancestors: bringing light to our walls and enhancing our living spaces.

From flickering candlelight to modern design statements, the wall light has come a long way.
