Do you know the 5–7 rule for lighting?
A beautifully designed room isn’t just about furniture and colour. Lighting plays a huge part in creating atmosphere.

The 5–7 rule suggests using around five to seven separate light sources in a room, combining ambient, task and accent lighting to create depth, flexibility and warmth.

We’ve taken a closer look at how the rule works and how you can use it at home.

And next week, we’ll be looking at another important part of good lighting: understanding LED bulbs.

A Nigel Tyas classic – the Midhope-3

We’re delighted to share that the Midhope-3 hand-forged wrought iron chandelier can now be ordered online, joining the Midhope-6 already available in the collection.

Three elegant scroll-top candle holders rise from a substantial hand-forged iron hoop, suspended from a traditional hand-forged ceiling hook and chain.

The Midhope has its roots in historic British ironwork, but its simple architectural form gives it a timeless quality that works beautifully in both period and contemporary interiors.

And, importantly, this isn't a mass-produced reproduction.

Each Midhope-3 is individually forged by skilled blacksmiths in our Suffolk forge. The traditional techniques leave subtle variations and natural marks in the iron – the small details that give genuine hand-crafted ironwork its character.

Made to order in Britain and designed to last for generations.
The Midhope-3 is particularly suited to dining rooms, hallways, bedrooms and living spaces where warm, atmospheric lighting is wanted.

A classic design. Hand-forged in Suffolk. Made for generations.

The Langsett is back. We’re delighted to reintroduce the Langsett-1 wrought iron lantern – the first of a new family of hand-forged lanterns from Nigel Tyas Ironwork.

Inspired by the character of traditional coaching-house lanterns, the Langsett combines graceful arched lines with substantial wrought iron and carefully worked details.

But the real difference is in how it is made.

Each Langsett-1 is individually hand-forged by skilled blacksmiths in our Suffolk forge, using traditional techniques. The natural variations and marks in the iron are part of the process – evidence that this is genuinely handmade rather than factory produced.
The clear glass allows the warm glow of the bulb to illuminate the ironwork, while the lantern remains a strong architectural feature even when unlit.

The chandelier has illuminated homes, halls, and palaces for centuries, but its story is about far more than light.

From simple wooden frames holding candles in medieval castles to the breathtaking crystal centrepieces of Europe's grand palaces, chandeliers have evolved alongside advances in technology, design, and craftsmanship.

Today, there is a growing appreciation for something that mass production often overlooks: the skill and individuality of handcrafted lighting. Bespoke chandeliers, forged and finished by hand, bring character, authenticity, and timeless quality to modern interiors.

Every hammer mark, every curve, and every detail tells a story of craftsmanship that cannot be replicated by a machine.

In a world of fast manufacturing, handcrafted lighting remains a celebration of artistry, tradition, and enduring design.
