Health and safety is often seen as something separate from HR.

In reality, it is a core part of how you manage and support your people.

Whether you are running a business, a charity or a growing organisation, the responsibility is the same. You have a duty to protect not just employees, but anyone affected by your work, including volunteers, clients and the public.

For many organisations, especially smaller ones, health and safety is managed alongside everything else. It is often handled by someone who is not a specialist, with limited time and competing priorities.

That is where clear structure makes a real difference.

A strong approach to health and safety is not about overcomplicating things. It is about:

• understanding your responsibilities
• carrying out practical risk assessments
• having clear ownership
• keeping policies up to date
• involving your team in creating a safe environment

When health and safety is embedded into your wider HR processes, it becomes far more manageable and far more effective.

It is not just about compliance. It is about creating a workplace where people feel safe, supported and able to do their job confidently.

If you would like support reviewing your HR and health and safety processes, HRM Derbyshire Peaks is here to help.

Saying nothing after a hard conversation can sometimes make things worse, not better.

A clear, professional follow-up helps avoid misunderstandings, keeps things transparent, and shows the employee that the conversation meant something. It doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does need to happen.

Good communication after the difficult bit is often what makes the difference.

👉 If managing those conversations feels daunting, I can support you through them. You don’t have to do it alone.

Can remote HR support work just as well as in house HR?

For many SMEs, the answer is yes.

Remote HR support gives you access to professional HR guidance without the cost and commitment of a full time in house HR manager. In practice, it often looks very similar to internal support: calls, emails, virtual meetings, policy reviews, manager guidance, documentation support and help navigating day to day people issues.

The real difference is flexibility.

Many growing businesses do not need a full HR department. They need practical support when situations arise, clear advice they can trust, and a team who understands how their business operates.

Here are some of the things help with:

✔️ employee relations
✔️ contracts and policies
✔️ onboarding and recruitment
✔️ absence and performance management
✔️ HR compliance and documentation

Good HR support should feel accessible, responsive and straightforward, whether it is delivered remotely or in house.

As technology and flexible working continue to evolve, more businesses are choosing remote HR support as a practical, cost effective solution.

The best HR often goes unnoticed

When HR is working well, it quietly supports every part of the business.

Employees know what is expected of them.

Managers feel confident handling people issues.

Policies are up to date.

Processes run consistently.

Problems are often resolved before they become formal issues.

That is the value of proactive HR.

It is not just about responding to grievances or disciplinary matters.

It is about creating strong foundations that help businesses grow with confidence while supporting employees every step of the way.

What does a HR consultant actually do?

Many people think HR is simply about contracts and policies.

In reality, HR supports almost every stage of the employee journey.

An HR consultant can help with:

✔️ recruitment

✔️ onboarding

✔️ contracts and documentation

✔️ employee relations

✔️ performance management

✔️ absence management

✔️ employment law guidance

✔️ manager support

Ultimately, good HR helps businesses create clear processes, reduce risk and manage people with confidence.

High staff turnover costs more than you might think

When an employee leaves, the cost goes far beyond recruiting someone new.

There is time spent advertising the role, reviewing applications, interviewing candidates and onboarding a replacement. Existing team members often take on extra work, productivity can dip, and valuable knowledge leaves with the employee.

High turnover can also affect team morale and customer experience, particularly in smaller businesses where every employee plays an important role.

Reducing staff turnover is not about one quick fix. It comes from creating a workplace where people feel supported, valued and motivated to stay.

This can include:

✔️ effective recruitment

✔️ strong onboarding

✔️ supportive management

✔️ opportunities for development

✔️ regular communication and feedback

Investing in employee retention is often far more cost effective than repeatedly replacing good people.

Workplace culture is created every day 💜

Culture is not defined by what’s written on your website or displayed on your office wall.

It is shaped by everyday actions.

The conversations managers have.

The way employees are treated.

How success is recognised.

How challenges are handled.

Every decision contributes to the type of workplace you are creating.

Positive workplace cultures are built through consistency, trust, fairness and good leadership.

When employees feel respected and supported, they are more likely to be engaged, motivated and committed to the business.

Culture is not something you create once.

It is something you build every day.

What three words would your employees use to describe your workplace culture?

Becoming a manager is about more than being good at your job.

Many employees are promoted because they are excellent in their role.

Managing people, however, requires a completely different set of skills.

New managers should understand how to:

✔️ communicate expectations clearly

✔️ give constructive feedback

✔️ manage absence fairly

✔️ handle difficult conversations confidently

✔️ keep appropriate documentation

Supporting new managers from the beginning helps build confidence, improves consistency and creates a better experience for employees across the business.

Good management is learned through guidance, experience and ongoing support.

Sometimes the biggest HR risks are the questions we never ask.

It is easy to assume everything is working well until a problem arises.

Taking time to step back and ask the right questions can help identify opportunities for improvement before issues develop.

For example:

• Are our HR policies still fit for purpose?

• Are managers applying processes consistently?

• Is our onboarding setting employees up for success?

• Are employees clear on expectations?

• Could our documentation support us if a dispute arose?

Regularly reviewing your HR processes helps strengthen your business, improve employee experience and reduce unnecessary risk.

When did you last take a step back and review your HR function?
