Definitely feeling the back to school September vibe, heading back to events, meeting new people and reconnecting with others after the summer.

This week after the hottest summer on record, I’m off to a rain drenched field for Ideas Fest this week.

I can’t wait! 😊

Looking forward to the ‘Glastonbury of business events’ checking out talks, meeting other founders and business experts and chatting to likeminded people.

I’ve been having some interesting and insightful chats, particularly over the summer - it’s tough out there as we’re all adapting, navigating change and trying to grow. Which is why events like these are brilliant as we know we’re not alone as we figure it out.

It’s my first time there but already know a few friendly faces going. I’m also not camping (thankfully!) although did play with the idea…..pleased I didn’t now 😉

Really enjoyed hearing the story of amazing author, entrepreneur and speaker this week.

Preethi had always wanted to be a writer, whereas her family had insisted she studied law.

An incredible turn of events led Preethi to start writing a book, running her own PR agency and publishing company - all in secret from her family who thought she was working as a lawyer. The higher the stakes the more she persevered. She ended up with a multi book deal with Harper Collins and producing a one night one woman stage show, starring herself with no acting or producing experience whatsoever that was a West End sell out. Honestly, you couldn’t make it up!

My mouth dropped hearing her story as she fought against all knock backs, failed hard and, listening to that little voice inside her, kept going.

We heard her story for her new book launch, Unraveling as she shared the strength, the belief and the audacity it took to continue until her dreams became a reality.

We often see others ‘success’ without understanding the utter chaos behind the scenes. It was such an inspiration as whilst I never had the vision to run a business, and boy has it broken me at times, I’ve always believed that we’re meant to be the fullest version of ourselves.

In that process, you’re going to face challenges and yet, something compels you to keep going, learning and evolving to build something on your own terms. I’ve often said I can’t tell whether it’s calm zen or psychotic delusion.

Listening to Preethi, and having real honest conversations with other guests about stepping up, pushing through the fear gave me a little more courage to dare find out exactly how good it can get.

Thank you so much for the invite to this brilliant event. Great to meet you and will finally say hello to who I’ve been following on IG for years at the next event.

What a week! I’ve come away from convinced yet again that the business, creativity and collaboration can, and will, be a force for good.

I know when I started KV Comms, I firmly believed that not all businesses had to follow a damaging capitalist extractive ideology. Fast forward 15 years and it’s no longer the few outliers that hold that ‘nice to have’ belief but a growing ‘we must do better’ rebellion, particularly as we are all affected by geopolitical, financial and social volatility.

SXSW London is unlike other events I’ve encountered - where the minds from business, innovation, culture come together with a clear and shared understanding that change and innovation is a necessity but we hold the power and responsibility to reimagine something better, and what will that look like. Curiosity, creativity, collaboration and community are the key to ensuring better business and society.

From business greats, passionate activists, incredible minds and talent to royalty, this week has been an excellent insight and learning which I’ll break down and share across more content, in workshops and with clients.

And of course, let’s not forget the gold we find - from chats in the queue, in between talks, during coffee breaks or at events - when we connect with other brilliant like minded people.

We’ve spent years jumping through the hoops of relevancy, but visibility alone doesn’t build trust, connection or long-term growth.

Glorious Monday morning in London today. Blue skies and the city at its fairest 😍

Visited with its gorgeous design and riverside views, and the for breakfast with the fab

I credit Will for giving me my first hard lesson in media pitching many many moons ago.

I was spoiled with my previous consumer PR experience working with brands, particularly those who could afford celebrity endorsement, media wanted to work with the agency and its clients. This PR lark was easy, I thought.

When I moved to travel PR my job was to offer journalists all expenses paid travel to worldwide destinations so they could write about their experiences. Seriously? This was my job??

However Will shot down all our invites - he couldn’t use one pitch!

It didn’t matter how formidable the destination, the angle had to be relevant, fresh and topical to the title and its readers.

That lesson stayed with me, especially as media pressure and demands have evolved over the years since.

Media relations is the skilled blend of strong storytelling and laser sharp pitching. It doesn’t matter ‘who you know’, it’s the ability to understand each media title, its requirements and focus and pitch accordingly.

20 years later, I love that Will and I are still swapping and sharing stories and forever grateful for the grounded schooling that I took forward through my career.

As he continues to write travel features for an array of national titles, he’s also sharing London’s fascinating history as a tour guide. Forever the storyteller 😉
