Before you start burning regularly again, give your log store a quick check.

Look for water getting in, logs sitting directly on wet ground, or anywhere airflow has become blocked.

Firewood can sit happily for a long time when it's stored properly. The problem usually isn't how long it's been there, but what's happened to it while it was waiting.

Buying firewood shouldn’t be a guessing game.

You want to know what you’re buying, that it has been properly dried and that the quality will remain consistent from one order to the next.

Reliable supply matters too, especially once demand starts climbing.

Good firewood should give you confidence before you even light it, and a good supplier should be able to answer your questions about what they’re selling.

We’re looking for a Part-Time Delivery Driver to join the NW Logs team, with the opportunity for hours to increase to full-time during our busier periods.

The role will involve delivering logs to our customers, so we’re looking for someone reliable, friendly and comfortable with a role that can be physically demanding.

You’ll need to be happy working independently, dealing with customers and getting stuck in when loading and unloading deliveries.

Most people think about firewood when they’re cold.

We have to think about it long before that.

Processing, splitting, drying and preparing stock all happen behind the scenes so logs are ready when people start reaching for the matches again.

A good supply of firewood doesn’t magically appear when the temperature drops. The work starts much earlier.

The rings can show periods of faster and slower growth, while the darker heartwood sits towards the centre and the younger sapwood is found closer to the outside.

Even the pile beside your fire has a history.

Picked up two similar-sized logs and wondered why one feels twice as heavy?

Different tree species have different wood densities, so size alone doesn’t tell you how much a log will weigh. Moisture content can make a big difference too, because freshly cut or wet timber contains considerably more water.

Same size doesn’t always mean same log.
