We had a very exciting day yesterday rolling out our new full day 'Presentation Skills on Zoom and Teams' webinar. We had a lovely group of very talented participants. I am delighted to say that they told us how valuable the whole day had been for them.
We had a load of fun incorporating British beavers into our interactive discussions on planning a speech or presentation!

When I am running Unconscious Bias training for our clients there is one word people always ask about when I talk about it in the presentation. That word is Colourism.
Today that word is all over the media.
The issue about race and how dark your skin shade is, is massive in the US and other parts of the world.
Only now many people are becoming aware that Colourism is an issue in the UK.

Tip of the day: when you’re on a long work video call you might feel colder than normal. That’s because you’re not moving around as much as normal, so you’re blood isn’t pumping and keeping you warm! This can be difficult because when we get uncomfortable physically it becomes harder to concentrate on the work discussion. Keep a smart sweater or wrap near your computer that you can throw on if you get cold without having to leave your call. If the room is really cold (like the weather today!) put a hot water bottle or heated cushion between your feet. This will warm the blood in your feet and help your body feel warmer all over! For extra warmth, a towel over your knees will do the trick too. Just don’t get too cosy and warm or you might start to nod off 😆😴

Lots of people are talking about the shocking Handforth Parish Council meeting that’s gone viral this week. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a zoom meeting that goes very wrong very quickly. If you ever find yourself on a call like that, stay calm, take a moment and decide: how much control do I have here? Can I help solve this? If you can, then calmly but firmly ask for the action you think will help. If not, decide if you want to stay in the meeting, or leave. Remember that no-one is required to endure bullying or harassment in the workplace!

Here is a quick tip to help you look more natural on video calls. Find your computer's camera lens (it's often at the top of your screen if it's built into your computer). Move the camera up to the same level as your eyes. To do this, see if you can change where the camera is clipped to if it's moveable. If it's built into your screen, pop a few books under the monitor, or see if you can raise the table height a bit. If the camera is too low, you will be looking down into the lens, giving you a double chin and shadowed face - which is never the best look for anyone!

Hands up people finding they are having problems sleeping?
Bet there are quite a few.
Classically problems can include getting to sleep; waking up during the night and not getting back to sleep; early waking; and finally waking up still feeling totally exhausted.

Here are my top tips from our 'Burning the Candle?' workshop on work life balance, to try if you are affected.

Go to bed at the same time every night.
Create a pattern or ritual so your brain starts to settle ready to sleep.
Have a sweet drink before bed - sweet tea or a milky drink.
Have a warm bath or shower - this helps your body relax and drops your core temperature ready to sleep.
Don’t read social media or watch the news for at least an hour before bed.
Reduce your alcohol intake so that you are not tipsy when to go to bed: this can be one of the causes of wakefulness during the night.
Use a Magnesium Body Spray spray before you go to bed, or if you wake early - or both! Magnesium is essential for good sleep.

If a pattern of sleeplessness has developed over a number of nights, break the pattern. Before you go to bed, set up a warm place to sit if you wake up. It should be away from bed with a light and an old duvet or blanket. When you realise you are awake, get up. Get a warm (non alcoholic) drink. Avoid social media etc. Read an old, familiar, and not too suspenseful book for at least 20 min. You should be a bit sleepy by this time. So time to go back to bed and fall asleep.

Please add your top tips as comments to this post.
Sleep well tonight everyone.

Midas has been using Zoom for webinars and remote coaching for over a year now. Now many of our clients are depending on Zoom to keep functioning.
This link tells you how to keep your meetings secure online.

We love that so many people are finding Zoom to be an easy way to stay connected in this time of social distancing, school closures, and work-from-home routines. All these virtual happy hours, coffee breaks, afternoon hangs, dance practices, yoga sessions, and so many other events over Zoom — your...

In our courses we often talk about framing. Today there is a brilliant example of how framing can be a big help from Terry Waite, who was held hostage in the Lebanon by terrorists. If you are thinking that you are stuck at home during the lockdown, try changing the frame. Tell yourself instead that you are safe at home - and the way you look at your world will feel a whole lot brighter.

In many of our courses we look at the way people see images that we are familiar with. We can rearrange patterns in our minds to fit something familiar. This can cause problems - or it can be amusing as in this lovely little post!
