Before we get into the nit and grit of the content, I felt it was necessary to provide a brief background to my experiences within the world of sports science.
Throughout university I opted to take an open-minded approach to my study - taking any opportunity to broaden my knowledge across different areas of sport science rather than specialising in a specific field. This proved helpful when understanding the theory and evidence behind varying challenges we face and the impacts that sport and exercise can have on our physical, physiological and mental health.
At the beginning of my masters degree, I was ready to make in-roads on a career in elite sport and with that an internship opportunity presented itself with the academy at Newport County AFC.
It started as a 15 minute warm-up session, x3 times a week with the occasional opportunity to assist testing with older age groups. But through consistency and building positive rapports with the staff, coaches and players I started seeing the length of the sessions increase and more opportunities to be involved with the professional development phase of the academy.
As my internship was nearing towards its end, I was offered the position to become a more regular staff member around the academy for the 22/23 season. Around three half point of the season, I had the opportunity to assist the first team with their pitch and gym based sessions and absolutely loved every second of it!
Soon after, I took full responsibility of the Head of Performance role and temporarily covered the position till the end of the season. I’ll always be thankful to all the staff for this amazing and rare opportunity to express myself as a practitioner in the field.
Present day it’s time to find my own path and use the skills and experience gathered from education and my internship to build my own consultancy that everyone can find utilise and benefit from.
Next week, expect to see more detail behind the services of the consultancy!
