Is the cover letter dead?

I've seen many articles debating this, and maybe the printed paper version or - good gosh - the handwritten version (!) might be, but there's an opportunity missed when you don't take advantage of the email containing your CV attachment to say something other than "Please see my CV attached"

Your Cover Letter or email is your chance to show a bit more personality than your CV, to mention a bit about why you want this role or why you'd be a good fit, or what you find interesting or great about the company you're applying for.

Don't miss an opportunity - it could be the difference between a "We'd like to meet you" or the dreaded "No Thanks" response.

Can I let you in on a bit of a naughty secret??

Although I write and update CV's, up until a week ago, my own CV was a mess I hadn't updated in about 6 years!! I know, not a great example to be setting!!

I was sure I had done it fairly recently, but whether I did or not, I could only find my old one from before I knew what a decent CV looked like!

It had done the job for me for the guts of 10 years, but it really wasn't anything special. Do you feel like maybe that's what your CV is like? Functional, has all the required info, but it's not terribly inspiring?

I can help with that.

With much of the UK now back to normal - or as close as we've been since the start of the pandemic, are you back in the office or still remote working?

And despite the huge benefits remote working can provide (I'm a huge advocate myself!) do you feel like you're missing out on the office experience we had before??

Interviews can be stressful. Maybe you're great at answering all the usual job-based or skills-oriented questions, but then it comes to the broader ones, you freeze up and don't know what the interviewer is truly looking for;

"Where do you want to be in 5 years?"
"Whats your biggest weakness?"

I remember an interview where I was asked "Whats the biggest challenge you've faced in your life and how did you overcome it?" I thought hard about it, and gave the best answer I could. The response from the interviewer told me that I probably wouldn't be hearing back...but that's okay, it obviously wouldn't have been a good fit and wasn't meant to be...

Need to brush up your interview skills? I can help.

From describing your strengths and weaknesses to explaining the reason behind a career move, which interview questions give you the shivers?

I did a CV for a stay-at-home-mum, whose kids were all now at school age, and she was so apologetic...

"I'm sorry there are so many gaps..."
"I'm sorry there isn't much on there..."
"I'm not sure what you'll be able to do with it..."

I told her to STOP. Stop apologising. While she might not have had many paying jobs, She had been a full time mum to 3 kids, one of whom had pretty intense additional needs which she had fought hard to get him support for.

She wanted to go into the care sector. PERFECT. Because, what she did have in abundance, which made her perfect for those kinds of jobs, was her life experience from being a mum, and a wealth of transferable skills.
- Caring for others
- Meeting complex needs
- Being a strong advocate for others who couldn't do it for themselves

I mean...that was just a tiny snapshot of all she could do. She was not JUST a stay at home mum. Grades and employment experience have their merits, but never overlook your innate transferable skills from what life has thrown at you outside of work.

If you need help figuring out what transferable skills you can take from your life's experience, and how best to put those down on paper, let me know..

It's Monday again! I don't know about you, but my weeks are blurring together and I can't believe we're nearly into October! Safe to say, it's been a bit of a weird couple of years. So much has changed, including how and where people want to work, and what they want their life to look like.

If you could do with a change or some support to explore a new avenue when it comes to your career, I'd be happy to help.

HOW DO YOU GET TO WHERE YOU WANT TO BE??

My friend Nikki would say that I'm the one with the words, and I've said before, that my mission is to help you put your best foot forward to get where you want to be; but I appreciate that some folk are more visual, so here's one for you.

What's missing here? You've got your starting point, and your destination...

If you said the directions, or route, you're absolutely right.

Do you know how you're getting to where you want to be? No?

I can help with that ;)
