I’ve seen numerous posts on social media about Community Interest Company ‘silent directors’ or similar descriptions.

There is no such thing. You are a company director or you are not, it’s that simple and clearcut.

A director role is not to be taken lightly. You are jointly and severally responsible.

‘I’m a ‘silent director ’carries no weight’. If the directors act outside their powers the veil of incorporation may not protect you.

You have to be interested, you have to attend and participate in meetings and you have to take your responsibilities seriously especially where public money (grants) is concerned.

If you’re asleep at the wheel, you may crash.

A really positive and energising day this week at the Volunteering Summit 2026 organised by Voluntary and Community Action Sunderland, Sunderland’s leading local infrastructure organisation (LIO) supporting the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector.

The event hosted at Hope Vineyard Church was extremely well attended and there was a genuine sense of optimism, collaboration and shared purpose throughout the day, despite the significant challenges currently facing the sector. The programme featured insightful speakers, honest discussion, strong audience participation and plenty of opportunities for organisations to connect, share experiences and learn from one another.

The venue provided a warm and welcoming setting and the hospitality throughout the day was excellent, including a very well received buffet lunch. The cookies went down a treat!

Huge credit to Janette, Steve and everyone involved in organising such a valuable and positive event for Sunderland. I will be writing up the conference report, which will be published by Voluntary and Community Action Sunderland very soon.

Is your not for profit organisation fit for funding?

Many are doing great work but still struggle to secure funding. Often it comes down to being just a few steps away from being fully prepared.

I have created a free Fit for Funding checklist to help you take a step back and see where you stand.

It is simple, practical, and based on real experience.

You can use it to:
• check your readiness
• spot gaps
• focus on what really matters before applying
