When I first started as a VA not many people knew what they were. So, back then I had to describe it so I used the term a secretary that works from home.

I was asked quite frequently can you come and work in my office or home.

I tried my best not to be flippant and say that defeats the object of being a ‘virtual’ assistant.

My question was always - so why would you need me to be in your office?

Answers varied from: well that’s where I work to all my papers are here and I can’t dictate my letters if you aren’t sitting right here…

So, generally if they insisted on me having to go to their office I declined the work. But if they decided that we could meet up once so they could show me what was required of me, then I could work from home with some help from BT, Royal Mail, emails and a fax machine then all was good.

My how times have changed!

I don’t get asked to go and work in peoples offices often as people know what a virtual assistant is now..

But, what do you think a virtual assistant is and what do you think they should do for you?

I am an introvert

I have a love hate relationship with social media.

I love to hate it but it keeps tapping me on the shoulder saying, “what is it you don’t like about me?”

Then I get to thinking, what is it that I hate about it…

Turns out I don’t actually hate IT, it is that is scares me.

It then asks “why do I scare you?”

Well, you can be nasty, you can be mean, if I show you my soul you might laugh at me, you may not even let anyone see my words, you might show my words to the wrong people - they may laugh at me…

But what if

What if I do show my soul and the right people see it, what then, will I love social media?

Probably or possibly?

So this is me, the introvert, putting my soul out there in order to get out of my own head and connect with others again and stop hiding under my desk!

Over the years you get a feel for what works best for you.

It's been more than 20 years since I was in a classroom (mic drop)... yes I am that old!

I feel that I learn best when I am shown in person how to do something.

That way I can ask questions and write my own style of notes as I go along.

Don't get me wrong I do learn via books and videos and all the other forms of online interactions, but I prefer an 'expert' in the field to show me.

Let me know what way you prefer to learn new things.

Please share your thoughts, I am very interested to know.

Are you connected?

We all have connections, but are we connected?

I am guilty of stepping away from getting truly connected on social media. I dip in and out.

I don’t look at the stats to see if they are good or bad. I look for posts I want to engage with when I am present and I scroll and sit in the background watching to see how posts go.

This is a bit like my business, I’m watching my clients shine in the foreground whilst I work in the background helping them connect and shine.

What is your Why?

Why did you decide to start your own business?

Did you make a conscious decision and plan it all out before taking the plunge?

When I was waiting in a queue to pick up my great nephew this week I got chatting to a woman picking up her grandchild, she seemed to be well versed in the school run etiquette and I was glad about that… it’s been a good while since I had to do that!

We got to chatting and she asked me what I do. I answered I’m a virtual assistant. Her face lit up, she said goodness me that’s what my daughter wants to do, she hates her JOB!

She asked me how long I had been doing it for and how does it pay…🤔

I’m in my 15th year and thankfully after the last 2 years it has picked up nicely.

Her next question was should her daughter throw in her job and just do it..

Not knowing the situation of the daughter I said the following:

Unless she has a bit of capital behind her to be able to manage for 6 months to a year my advice would be to try and start up the business whilst she has her job. Get a client or two and build on that until she feels she can quit her job.

Peace - it’s something we all need, isn’t it.
Now more than ever.

We have just been through 2 years of the most incredible challenges, grief, and prolonged stress.

This is why I do what I do.
This is what brings me joy.

I know - because they tell me all the time - that having my support in their businesses gives my clients some peace.

By taking a little (or a lot) of stress off their hands, doing the tasks that allow them to run their businesses, and by keeping a steady hold on things, that little bit of peace goes such a long way.

It’s my way of changing the world.

Taking time out in nature to restore, reconnect and renew is a vital part of my own self care.

For me, a walk with my dog Bronson, or a wander on a blustery beach is perfect for my soul.

We can’t be there for others if we aren’t nourished ourselves.
