Effective Business Network

Effective Business Network Business focused, relaxed, friendly networking meetings. Visitors are welcome, check out our website for further details! There are no referral pressure points!

Where business professionals come together to forge mutually beneficial connections and relationships in a relaxed environment. ebn is relaxed and informal, but business focused. The success rates of the group members are a testimonial to the networking equation:

Knowledge + Trust = Business Growth

Referrals will come naturally, as the other attendees at meetings get to know you and trust you. Only then are they likely to refer your business to their clients, friends and associates. Are you new to networking, unsure of what to do, or nervous and apprehensive about attending? Don’t worry, our Group Directors are on hand to help – to greet you, introduce you to others, and give you guidance on some of the dos and don’ts of networking. They will help you to become a great networker. EBN membership is a valuable resource, and is one of the most cost effective ways of getting to the heart of the business community. Remember:

People buy people; if you are willing to help others, they will help you. If you are serious about networking and wish to develop relationships with people who you know and can trust, without any of the pressures that are associated with some groups, come along and give us a try. There is no obligation to immediately join EBN.

Norwich EBN is back on Tuesday 8 September, and if you've been meaning to come and see what we're about, this is a very good time to do it. πŸ‘‹

After a summer pause, we're getting the Norwich group back around the table and I'd love to see some new faces in the room alongside the existing members.

If you've never been to EBN before, you don't need to know anybody. You don't need a polished pitch. And you certainly don't need to turn up clutching a handful of referrals to prove you've earned your breakfast.

Come as you are, tell us about your business, meet other local business owners and have the kind of conversations that are difficult to manufacture from behind a screen.

You might find a client. You might find a supplier, collaborator or useful introduction. You might simply meet somebody whose experience gives you a completely different way of looking at something in your own business.

That's why we encourage people to visit first.

Experience the room. Meet the people. Then decide whether EBN feels like the right network for you.

One of the things I really like about EBN is that we meet fortnightly, and that's very deliberate.

Weekly networking can work brilliantly for some people, but for me, when you're actually running a business, every single week can very quickly start to feel like another commitment in an already packed diary.

Fortnightly gives you enough consistency to build proper relationships. You see people regularly enough to remember what they do, understand who they're looking to meet, spot opportunities for them and actually get to know them as people.

But you've also got time in between meetings for business to happen.

Time to follow up on conversations. Time to make introductions. Time to do the work that came out of the meeting. And, quite frankly, time to run your own business.

For me, fortnightly is the sweet spot. Regular enough to build relationships, but not so often that networking becomes another job.

Greg O'Sullivan's clients rarely say the best thing he gave them was a cleaner house.

They say: more time, less stress and one less thing to worry about.

And that tells you a lot about the way Greg and his wife run Time For You Brentwood.

We're delighted to welcome Greg to our Brentwood EBN group. πŸ‘‹

Their clients are busy professionals, families, retirees and people who simply want to spend more of their time on the things that matter to them. Every cleaner is personally interviewed, reference checked and carefully matched, because inviting somebody into your home is about trust as much as it is about cleaning.

Between Greg and his wife, they bring more than 50 years of customer-service experience, including Greg's previous leadership of European Service operations for premium global brands Sub-Zero and Wolf, and his wife's experience in luxury skincare and aboard the QE2.

They've taken those standards and applied them to a sector where customers don't always expect that level of service.

So yes, the house gets cleaned. But what they're really providing is reliability, peace of mind and time back.

Welcome to EBN, Greg. Great to have you with us at Brentwood.

Good financial advice starts with understanding the person, not just the numbers.

That's the philosophy Daniel Bowen brings to Stepwoods Financial Planning, and we're delighted to welcome him to our Braintree group. πŸ‘‹

Daniel works with professionals, business owners and trustees who want to take a more proactive approach to their finances, particularly around retirement planning, investments and their wider financial position.

His focus is on long-term relationships rather than one-off transactions. He takes time to understand what matters to the individual, explains recommendations in a straightforward way and wants clients to leave meetings feeling more informed, more confident and clearer about where they stand.

Stepwoods also has a dedicated advice service for women who want financial planning tailored to their own circumstances and priorities.

Welcome to EBN, Daniel. It's great to have you with us in Braintree.

If you've been wondering whether the right business network could actually make a difference to your business, there's a very easy way to find out.

Come and sit around the table with us.

Long Melford EBN meets tomorrow morning, Wednesday 26 August, and we're looking to welcome more local business owners into the room.

Not to collect business cards.

Not to perform a polished sales pitch.

And not because we're going to promise that somebody will hand you a customer before breakfast is over.

Come because two hours spent talking properly with other business owners can introduce you to people, experience, ideas and opportunities you simply wouldn't encounter sitting behind your own desk.

You might meet a future client. You might meet somebody you end up collaborating with. You might get a completely different perspective on something happening in your business. Or you might simply meet a group of people you'd like to get to know better.

That's the point of visiting.

You don't have to decide whether EBN is for you before you arrive. Come and experience the group first, then decide.

Some of the most useful conversations in business are the ones you didn't know you needed to have.

You can Google an answer when you know the question.

You can book an expert when you know you need help.

But what about the things you haven't spotted yet?

One of the things I love about getting business owners around a table is how often a completely ordinary conversation goes somewhere unexpected.

Someone mentions a problem they're having. Somebody else asks a question they hadn't considered. Another person has been through exactly the same thing three years earlier. Someone knows a person who could help. And suddenly a problem that had been rattling around in one person's head looks completely different.

None of that was on an agenda.

Nobody walked into the room thinking... Right then, today I need somebody to challenge the way I'm looking at this.

It happened because they were in a room with other business owners who bring different experience, different knowledge and different ways of thinking.

That's one of the reasons I think good networking is about far more than collecting leads and referrals.

Sometimes the most valuable thing you leave with isn't a new customer.

It's a better question, a different perspective, a useful introduction, an idea you hadn't considered or simply the reassurance that somebody else has been there before.

You don't always know which conversation you need until you're having it.

And to have it, you need to be in the room!

I have a bit of an issue with forced referrals.

Not referrals themselves. Good introductions are one of the brilliant things that can come from networking.

It's the forcing bit I don't agree with.

Because if somebody has to produce a certain number of referrals, we're measuring whether they made an introduction, not whether it was actually a good one.

If somebody tells me they need an accountant, my first thought isn't simply, I know an accountant, here you go...

I want to know what they need. What sort of business do they run? What kind of support are they looking for? How do they like to work? I know several accountants, so which one is genuinely the best fit for that particular person?

That is a very different introduction.

At EBN, introductions happen all the time. So do collaborations, opportunities and members working together.

But I want those things to happen because people have got to know each other well enough to recognise the right person, at the right time, for the right reason.

Not because somebody needs to tick a box.

Relationships first. The commercial stuff can grow from there.

That's the kind of networking I believe in.

If Chelmsford EBN has been sitting on your "I must try that sometime" list, tomorrow would be a fairly good time to stop putting it off. πŸ˜„

Our Chelmsford group meets tomorrow, Friday 21 August.

Come along and see what EBN is actually like rather than trying to decide whether networking is for you from the outside.

There is structure, but no networking performance.

You'll get time to introduce yourself properly, hear what's happening in other people's businesses, have actual conversations and meet business owners you can get to know over time.

And if you decide it isn't your thing? That's absolutely fine too. That's why we encourage people to visit before joining.

Experience it first. Decide afterwards.

It's Colchester EBN day today, and this is the bit of EBN you can't really understand from a social media post.

You can read about the format.

You can look at photographs.

We can tell you there are no forced referrals, no referral quotas and no 60-second performance required.

But the really valuable bit is harder to put on a graphic.

It's the conversation that starts with somebody mentioning a problem they're having and ends with three other business owners offering completely different perspectives.

It's somebody saying, "I know exactly who you should speak to."

It's learning something about another member's business that means, three weeks later, you suddenly recognise the perfect opportunity for them.

It's laughing over breakfast with people who also understand what running a business actually feels like.

That's why we encourage people to visit before they join.

You need to experience the room.
