So as promised in my last post, showing the raft foundation/slab for our oak barn, here is an update of how the raising of the frame has gone this week.
For a bit of context the frame was made last summer. I had hoped to have got the groundworks done before the weather broke last autumn, and got the frame up then, but didn’t make it, so it’s been stored under sheets for the last 10-12 months.
We spent Monday sorting out and re-aquatinting ourselves with the kit as it was uncovered.
Tuesday morning saw the first pieces being pegged together……
Fast forward to Friday afternoon and this is where we are at. Everything has gone together smoothly and fitted nice with no great dramas, which is good fortune given that the frame has sat for a year.
This is largely testament to only using best quality QPA grade beams and having a reliable and trustworthy supplier. If you start with good timber and do your job right you’ll always end up with a good job.
All being well the rest of the main frame should be finished by the end of Tuesday, followed by the installation of the purlins. Then we just have to make/build a gable and doorway which will be done in situ. And that will be the frame done.
I’ll update again in a week.

Last week saw the completion of the concrete raft for the oak barn, which will be our new workshop.
What the pics below don’t show is the 1.0m-1.2m excavation over the complete area and the subsequent refill and compact with imported stone to create a stable pad upon which to cast the raft.
This was necessary due to the fact that we are on medium shrinkable clay, combined with the proximity of trees, both in the woods next to us, and the mature leylandii hedge that we removed along the fence/ road boundary.
We’ve been working on in this since April as well as turning work out of our temporary workshop - the tent in the background.
we’re really pleased that we’ve now passed this milestone in the build and we’re out of the ground, and we can finally look forward to erecting the frame in the coming weeks.
Watch this space!

So once again I haven’t posted any work photos for a while even though we’ve been doing plenty. This is a glazed veranda that we finished this week at Bream. As you can see the Patent Glazing glass roof tapered from 1.6m up to 3.6m and was 8m long. The roof covers a newly laid (by others) patio and gives our clients a fantastic, light and dry place to sit out outside their cottage and take in the impressive views over the Forest to Speech House and beyond.
Thanks to Charity and Gareth for choosing us to build the veranda.

As always so difficult to photograph well with the scaffold in the way!
We spent a few days installing this green oak frame at Charmouth in Dorset this week.
Everything went really well and very happy builders and customer, Johnathan.
As you can see in some of the photos the property was high on the hill above the town and this extension will give the owners an upper floor where they can look down onto the beach snd out to sea, when it’s not quite so murky!!
The roof was asymmetric with one side at 12 degrees and the other at 48.
We rebated part of the Western side of the frame from floor to roof level to be direct glazed. This will be the new stairwell to the upper floor and access to a large outside balcony which will also have the same views out to sea. The lower floor will have a new access from the cottage into an large glass fronted sitting area with a new bathroom and utility room to the other side.
The builders, Pete and his team, who we have worked with before, will be completing the extension.
The frame attracted lots of interest from many passing locals, and murmurs of ‘we’ve been thinking about an oak extension too!’, so hopefully we’ll be back to Old Lyme Hill again in the future.
Thanks to Johnathan and Pete and his team for the tea, the help installing and for their great sense of humour…

Few weeks since I’ve posted progress pics of the oak barn frame.
First one is a full bay truss laid out. four of these have now been completed
The following pics show half of an end frame, of which as of today, we’ve completed one complete end and half of the other.
Whilst this has been going on, last week, we laid the pipe array for our ground source heat pump. This is the first step of the installation of the gshp system to heat our house. 1.6km of pipe in 800m of 1mx1m trench.
Been a busy few weeks!!

Difficult one to photograph this… it’s one of the two main truss frames that were completed this week. It’s not easy to convey the scale of these trusses….They clear span 12m and will stand 7m. They are built off the Jowl posts, that were built into one of the walls I posted a week or two ago. The lower timbers are 200 wide narrowing to 150 wide from the hammer beams up.
These were so big they spilt out of the door if the workshop when fully assembled.
We’re hoping to complete the other two this week then onto the barn ends.

Friday afternoon saw the completion of 2/3rds of the main front wall section of the Barn. There is still another 3.6m bay to add to the right which will take us to the 5m entrance door with a further 2m-ish bay to the right of the entrance.
After our start on Tuesday we spent a few days getting our heads around the build, sorting through and identifying timbers and cutting the majority of the Jowl posts. Then the last two days cutting this wall section.
We’ll crack on on Monday and get the last third of the wall section finished, then the door way and right hand bay.
More photos next week as the frame progresses.

We have started cutting the Barn Frame today(Tuesday 22nd). Cutting 220 x 400 Jowl post from the supplied blanks.
There are 12 in the building in total. The jowl post joint deals with the intersection of the Bay Post, the Wall Plate and the Tie Beam, or on our case the Hammer Beam, which is part of the tie across the building, and finally the truss rafter. It’s a satisfying joint to cut as its three dimensional with the four timbers coming together in one place.
I’ll post more pics as the joints progress.

The rest of the Barn Frame oak arrived this morning from France. Another 8m3, so that’s around 24m3 in total and 242 pieces.
We’ve got a small job to make for a customer in Chipping Campden, that should be completed by Monday, then work starts on the Barn.
