☕ Do you really have to use DeLonghi EcoDecalk?

If you own a DeLonghi coffee machine, you’ve probably seen EcoDecalk recommended when it’s time to descale.

But is there anything particularly special about it — and can you use an alternative?

We’ve taken a closer look at what EcoDecalk actually contains, how it works, and how it compares with our Pazazz Liquid Limescale Remover
EcoDecalk uses lactic acid as its principal descaling acid, while Pazazz takes a different approach using sulfamic (sulphamidic) acid. Both are purpose-made coffee machine descalers designed to tackle the same problem: mineral scale building up inside your machine.

We also explain why we wouldn’t recommend reaching for the vinegar bottle instead!

Pazazz is an independent brand and is not manufactured, approved or endorsed by DeLonghi.

☕ What does “good quality” actually mean?

We hear the words good quality, poor quality and premium quality all the time.

But what are we actually describing?

Is a heavier portafilter automatically better than a lighter one? Is thicker coffee filter paper necessarily higher quality? Does a more expensive product automatically perform better?

Not necessarily.

Quality can mean durability, manufacturing consistency, dimensional accuracy, appearance, performance, materials — or simply whether a product does the job it was designed to do.

And that's why saying something is simply “good quality” or “poor quality” often doesn't tell us very much.

In our latest article, we take a closer look at what quality really means — and why fitness for purpose might actually be a much more useful way of thinking about the products we buy.

👇 Have a read and let us know what you think.

What does “good quality” actually mean? We explore product quality, coffee filter papers, portafilters and why specific feedback matters.

☕ **Ever wondered why the coffee machine can seem reasonably priced… but the accessories cost a fortune?**

There’s a reason.

For many coffee machine manufacturers, selling you the machine is only the beginning. The real long-term money can be in the filter papers, descalers, cleaning tablets, portafilters, spare parts and other products you’ll buy for years afterwards.

And here’s another interesting bit: the name on the box doesn’t necessarily tell you who actually manufactured what’s inside.

Our latest blog post looks behind the curtain at the **“razor-and-blades” business model**, private-label manufacturing, proprietary parts — and why a reputable compatible alternative doesn’t automatically mean inferior quality.

☕Your 14g portafilter basket doesn’t really exist.

Well… not in quite the way you might think.

Espresso baskets are commonly described as 7g, 14g, 18g or 21g — but those numbers aren’t precise measurements of how much coffee the basket can hold.

Why? Grams measure weight. A basket has volume.

The amount of coffee that fits comfortably into the same basket can change depending on:

☕ Grind size
🔥 Roast level and bean density
🌱 The coffee itself
⚖️ Distribution
💪 Tamping

That’s why you might comfortably fit 17g into a basket sold as 14g — without there being anything wrong with the basket.

In our latest article, we explain what those gram ratings actually mean, why volume in millilitres is a better way to compare basket capacity, and even show you a simple way to measure your existing basket at home.

A 14g espresso basket does not always hold 14g. Learn why coffee dose varies and why basket volume is more meaningful than nominal gram ratings.

☕ Plastic vs Ceramic Pour-Over Drippers — which actually makes better coffee?

Ceramic looks premium. It feels substantial. And it’s easy to assume that means it must be the better choice.

But when it comes to brewing performance, plastic has some surprisingly strong advantages.

🌡️ Better temperature stability
💪 Harder to break
🪶 Lighter and easier to handle
💷 Usually more affordable
☕ Less preheating and one less variable to worry about

Ceramic certainly has its advantages too — particularly its weight, appearance and traditional feel. But does that actually translate into better coffee?

We’ve taken a closer look at how the two materials affect heat, extraction and consistency in our latest guide.

Can you put your portafilter in the dishwasher?

It's a question we're asked surprisingly often.

While it might seem like a quick and easy way to clean your portafilter, dishwasher detergents and high temperatures can damage chrome-plated finishes, discolour the metal and, in some cases, shorten the life of the portafilter. Hand cleaning with a coffee equipment cleaner is generally the safer approach.

In our latest guide, we explain:
☕ Why dishwashers can damage portafilters
☕ What causes black staining and discolouration
☕ The best way to keep your portafilter clean without risking damage

☕ Why is finding the right De'Longhi portafilter so confusing?

Many coffee machine owners assume that all De'Longhi portafilters are interchangeable, but that's rarely the case. Different machines have used different designs over the years, making it surprisingly easy to order the wrong replacement.

In our latest guide, we explain why compatibility isn't always straightforward and what to look for before buying a replacement.

☕ Bleached or unbleached coffee filter papers: which are better?

It’s a question surrounded by myths and some rather misleading terminology. “Bleached” papers are now generally whitened using oxygen-based processes—not chlorine bleach—and both white and brown filter papers can produce excellent coffee.

Our latest guide explains:

✓ How white coffee filter papers are made
✓ What oxygen-whitened and TCF actually mean
✓ Whether brown papers are more environmentally friendly
✓ How paper colour can affect the taste of your coffee
✓ Which type you should choose

We keep seeing people trying to use our U-shaped filter papers in V-shaped drippers like the Hario V60… and then wondering why they split or cause uneven extraction.

They’re not defective — you’re just using the wrong shape!

If you want a perfect fit for your V60-02, grab our EE1402s – they’re made for it. No folding, no fuss.

But if you insist on using our U-shaped ones (EE1078 size 4s or EE1086 size 2s), because they’re about half the price of Hario’s, then at least fold them properly so they don’t split.

Yes, the shape mismatch can cause uneven extraction — but if cost’s your priority, this simple fold trick makes them work surprisingly well.
