We have 2 ears and 1 mouth - so the saying goes...

I've experienced two very poor examples of selling recently.

Example 1 - Cycling shop while I was looking at helmets
The owner of the shop jumped straight into what the helmets were, what features they had, why they were so expensive and what makes them so great.

Example 2 (same day) - Artisan craft market looking at kids T-Shirts
Stall owner straight away regaled me as to how sustainable and hand made the clothes were and how they were made by himalayan monks, woven directly from clouds (or something)

In both examples I can't remember the details they gave me properly because they didn't actually ask me a question, and therefore hadn't listened for what or whom I might be buying for. Therefore, their pitches were entirely irrelevant.

Had they asked a question like "who are you buying for?" or "what will you use it for?" they could have listened to the answer and perhaps told me details of their product that were actually relevant to me and facts/features that I might have remembered, or, indeed, directed me to a more appropriate product that would have been more suitable.

Neither made a sale that day - and the sad fact was I was REALLY in the mood to buy.

To sell - you must listen, and to enable you to listen you must ask questions.
