Pier Forty Two CV Services Give your CV some oompf! Make an impact with prospective employers with a cool, colourful design & engaging narrative. Hopefully, that's where I fit in!

I'm Rebecca and every single job interview I've had in the last 20+ years (without exception) has given me positive feedback on the layout and design of my CV and whilst I may not have been successful at getting ALL the jobs themselves, I've been told that my CV was the standout thing that got me called for interview. I'd spend hours crafting the narrative and researching different layouts to the

traditional Word doc trying to find the things that would get me noticed. Back in the early 2000s, I was made redundant when the company I was working for was sold and we were offered a free consultancy package of mentoring and assistance in CV's, job applications, interview skills, etc and I took every free course and seminar that was offered and banked that knowledge for future use. It all helped me secure a job at a blue-chip Telco where I stayed for 11 years working in Corporate Social Responsibility - my dream role. Design tools in today's digital world have made getting a funky CV together a whole lot easier and although the tools are available to us all, very few people have either the vision, patience or just simply the time to get it done. For as little as £75.00 I can turn your existing standard CV into something with some whizz and some bang. Drop me a PM for a free, honest review of your CV. Let's get that dream job!

According to a report and research by LinkedIn, the top four accountancy/auditing/consultancy firms (PwC, Deloitte, KPMG, and Ernst & Young) are no longer asking for a 2:1 Degree as part of their entry requirements. This is great news and anyone who knows these behemoths of industry knows that they have always boasted the high calibre of their employee base. It's heartening to see that these giants (who boast around 1.5 million employees between them worldwide) are recognising skills and experience over education. It's brilliant to get a degree if you can but it's not a path open to all (given the cost especially to go to uni these days), so it's good to know that skills are deemed just as important. The marketplace has changed and these industry leaders will no doubt blaze a trail for other organisations to follow suit.

Don't worry about your lack of a degree folks - just keep upskilling!

A ring-a-ding-ding CV might get you the interview but the rest of your professional profile needs to stand out too.

When LinkedIn was a pup, many of us copied and pasted our job descriptions over to our online profile and we treated it like a digital version of our CV. LinkedIn has grown up since then and it's the more edgy and human profiles that really stand out from the crowd.

Don't just regurgitate the same old same old! Use LinkedIn as your platform to say more. Or at least ask us to do it for you!

Here's a snippet of one we made earlier:

Business Development Director

"Here’s what I love about business development: There are no limits to what I can achieve in terms of success. That’s exciting and the knowledge that it’s the foundation of business and the economy is a real motivator – an endorsement that I’m making a real difference in the marketplace. I also love that it’s a challenge. Every day there are new obstacles to overcome and seemingly unforeseen issues to contend with but it all makes for a career that is never dull and has rewards beyond the bottom line. Business Development is a lifestyle, not a job. It fits my personality perfectly and that’s demonstrated in the success I’ve achieved across 30+ years in the sales business. I’ve managed large territories both in the UK and Australia and I’ve been a Director of my own business too. I’ve always exceeded expectations and my drive to smash targets, build business, and generate revenue has earned me a cracking reputation in the medical & pharmaceutical sales sector."

What does your LinkedIn say about you?

Updating your CV can feel like an overwhelming task and many of the people I work with haven't touched their CV for years so it can seem like a mammoth undertaking. Generally, it's not something you just one day decide to sort out because it's a job that needs doing (like clearing the loft) and it's far more likely as a result of a new job you want to apply for. That means you need a quick turnaround and inevitably the panic sets in. Some people do their best work under pressure, but if you're not one of those people you might want to think about outsourcing the task to a third party.

Here are four reasons why we think that's a great idea:

1. We know what recruiters are looking for. You keep abreast of trends in your industry and we keep abreast of trends in ours. The CV you would have sent three years ago will look very different from the CV you need to send today. The format, the layout, and the flow of important information. It all needs to be carefully thought through. A list of places you've worked along with your job description and some bullet points about your skills won't cut the mustard.

2. We can talk you up! Unless you're an absolute master at self-promotion, a networking ninja, and someone who could sell sand in the desert, you'll likely find it hard to self-congratulate and show off your achievements. Some of our favourite feedback from clients has been that they didn't realise how brilliant they could sound and were even mildly embarrassed by their own awesomeness! It's all in the delivery and it might be that you need a fresh perspective to wade through the role descriptions and draw out the truly brilliant things you've done.

3. Competencies are king. Most interviews use competencies to structure interviews so if you want to get to the face-to-face stage you have to demonstrate those competencies in your CV too. So many CVs we see simply list 'skills' and churn out the job description which isn't really about YOU and it's far from impactful. What makes you good at what you do? How have you demonstrated that in a way that shows the reader you've put some thought into this?

4. Who has the time! Right? You're busy, life is a bit crazy and now you need to sit down and re-do your CV? Urgh! You're not sure where to start and you procrastinate by doing the laundry, taking the dog out, and getting lost down a YouTube rabbit hole. Time ticks on and suddenly the job deadline looms and you rush and do a hatchet job on your current CV which then gets caught in the net of automated 'rejections'. Save yourself the stress and let us do it for you!

INSIGHT:

Post-pandemic I've seen a lot of posts on LinkedIn from connections that have been made redundant from their jobs.

The dictionary definition of 'redundant' is "no longer needed or useful."

Can we just take a moment to acknowledge what a dreadful word that is and to consider how it makes people feel and what it does to confidence and self-worth?

It's a word that has a long history in the job market and we've all used it (me included, having been knee-deep in many a corporate re-org) and I hadn't really considered what an awful word it was and what connotations it often has for the person on the receiving end of it. It's become a word we use much like the brands that have become generic in our lexicon (think Cellotape or Hoovering!) and we bandy it about because it's familiar and self-explanatory. These days it's usually 'roles' that are made redundant rather than people specifically but it doesn't make it an easier pill to swallow. No one wants to feel like they're 'no longer needed or useful'. HR folk may choose their words more carefully in consultation paperwork and perhaps they have moved away from it but it's still there as part of our job culture and the word simply refuses to die. I wonder what, if anything we could do to change this? Yes, the outcome might be the same but I can't help but think there might be a better turn of phrase we can coin to make the whole thing seem less derogatory? It's tough to be made 'redundant' and it can knock your self-esteem and hinder your chances of moving confidently to the next stage of your career.

For the record, I've been made 'redundant' once when I wasn't really ready and I've volunteered for redundancy on another occasion when I was very ready (but didn't get it!), so I've plenty of experience to draw on!

How do others feel about this word? Is it time for something else?
