Yesterday I went to the Heritage Filming Alliance Spring Conference, hosted at The Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford.

First there were interesting presentations about screen tourism from The Historic Dockyard Chatham and how they have worked with the Call the Midwife production company to offer a CTM Tour with costumed guides around the location, and Lady Carnarvon from Highclere Castle (the REAL Downton Abbey!) about how she supports the filming and the opportunities that screen tourism has brought.

Then Sally and Emma from the National Trust presented a case study of supporting the filming of Hamnet which I was privileged and proud to be one of the project conservators on…although seeing myself on the big screen staring at an apple tree that apples were having to be wired to one by one has firmly routed that I am a behind the camera girl!

The final presentation was from Kelsey Farish, a Lawyer, about AI in Film and was very thought provoking. There are certainly some takeaways from it that I will put in practice and I learnt a lot!

It was an inspiring and informative day and we were also treated to a tour of the Divinity School and the Bodleian Old Library - what an amazing place!

Another project starts soon so I spent time today going from basement to attics starting to plan. I haven’t been her since 2021 when we filmed Queen Charlotte so was great to be back and see some familiar faces.

Little bit of CPD today attending this conference all about Mould.

There can be a taboo about admitting you have mouldy collections but the aim is to break this and talk about what can be done to both mitigate the damage mould can cause to both people and collections and how to best manage it.

Very interesting talks in both morning and afternoon sessions.

Busy bee today restocking my training materials for some courses I’m teaching over the next few weeks..

This kit box makes a great storage vessel for my packing material samples. I use as a practical activity and get my learners to sort them into what they think are the “good”, the “bad” and the “maybe’s” - always a good session and brings up lots of discussion points!

I had a very exciting today and was lucky enough to visit Snow Business who provide snow and ice (amongst other effects!) for film and tv productions.

We were talked through the history of snow effects (asbestos and salt anyone?!!) through how effects are created and then cleaned up & even got to have a go ourselves.

It was absolutely fascinating to see how the different types of fake snow and waxes are used to create different snow and ice effects.

A thoroughly interesting day and my thanks to both Snow Business for the tour, and The National Trust for the invite!

Proud to say that as a freelancer I’m now part of the National Collections Care Traning Team for the National Trust.

Spent an informative day at National Trust HQ today for train the trainer sessions & looking forward to delivering training in the New Year!
