📢 September’s Nexus News is here!

Our latest edition of Nexus News is all about looking ahead.

Running a business means dealing with what’s in front of you, but taking the time to step back and ask “Is my business ready for the next 12 months?” can make a real difference.

In this month’s edition, we look at:

📈 Cash flow – understanding what’s coming in, what’s going out and where pressure could build.

💰 Profit margins – reviewing whether your margins are giving your business enough room to deal with rising costs and unexpected challenges.

🏦 Borrowing – considering how much reliance your business has on finance and whether that remains sustainable.

💷 HMRC – making sure tax liabilities are understood and planned for rather than becoming an unexpected pressure.

🔎 The “What If?” test – asking the difficult questions now and considering how your business would cope if circumstances changed.

📋 Planning ahead – practical steps directors can take today to strengthen their position for the year ahead.

The key message is simple:

Don’t wait for a problem to become urgent before you start looking at your options.

Taking time to review your business, identify potential pressure points and plan ahead can help you make more informed decisions about the future.

At Nexus, we’re here to help directors understand where they are, where they’re heading and what options may be available along the way.

If you could give one piece of advice to a business owner facing financial pressure, what would it be?

At Nexus, one of the things we see time and time again is that timing matters.

In our experience, many of the businesses that reach a point where they can no longer be rescued have one thing in common: advice wasn’t sought early enough.

We understand why.

Directors sometimes tell us they were worried about the stigma attached to speaking to an insolvency practice. They believed that contacting an insolvency practitioner automatically meant their business was going to close.

It doesn’t.

Seeking advice is about understanding your position and exploring the options available.

Those options could include restructuring, a CVA, a Moratorium, Administration or, where appropriate, an orderly closure.

The important thing is to understand those options before they become limited.

👉 The earlier you seek advice, the more choices you may have.

If your business is experiencing financial pressure, don’t wait until the situation becomes critical. A conversation can be the first step towards finding the right way forward.

Is an MVL Right for You?

Not every liquidation is about financial difficulty.

A Members’ Voluntary Liquidation (MVL) is a formal process for solvent companies that have reached the end of their journey, whether that’s because of retirement, succession planning, a sale or a wider restructuring.

An MVL can provide:

✔️ An orderly and structured closure
✔️ Formal distribution of company assets
✔️ Potential tax efficiencies for shareholders
✔️ A clear and professional exit strategy

The key is making sure an MVL is appropriate for your circumstances and understanding the options available before making a decision.

If you’re considering closing a profitable company, early professional advice can help you plan the right route.

Administration isn’t simply about businesses failing.

It’s often about protecting value.

Administration creates breathing space from creditor action while options are explored.

That could include:

🔹Restructuring

🔹Refinancing

🔹Selling the business

🔹Protecting employment

The objective is always achieving the best outcome available.

❌ CVL Myths vs ✅ Reality

There are a lot of misconceptions around Creditors’ Voluntary Liquidation (CVL).

We therefore thought we would separate some of the common CVL myths from the reality.

We often speak to directors who worry that liquidation automatically means they have failed, that they should keep trading at all costs, or that seeking advice means they’ve left things too late.

The reality is often very different.

A CVL can sometimes be the most responsible decision when a company is no longer viable.

Seeking advice early can help directors understand whether there are options to rescue the business or whether an orderly closure is the right route.

Knowing your options is always better than guessing.
