One of the biggest changes AI has brought to software engineering happens before a single line of code is written. 🛠️

Most industry conversations focus on raw output: How fast can AI generate code? How quickly can it build a feature?

But the real value? Using AI as a thought partner to dissect the problem first.

After 10 years as a software engineer, our technical co-founder shifts his approach from:

If AI is writing more of our code, should technical interviews test who can tell when it's wrong? 🤔

The real bottleneck in engineering isn't generating code anymore, it's judging and verifying it.

Data from CoderPad’s 2026 State of Tech Hiring report shows that when candidates use AI, hiring managers evaluate technical skill by:
1️⃣ Catching and fixing AI mistakes (66%)
2️⃣ Explaining trade-offs and correctness (56%)

Yet, 34% of companies still ban AI in interviews completely.

If developers use tools like Copilot or ChatGPT every day, banning them in interviews doesn't reflect real-world performance. Strong foundational knowledge is still essential, you need deep experience to recognise when AI output looks right on the surface, but contains hidden bugs!

What if technical interviews adapted to reflect this shift?

Instead of asking a candidate to write code entirely from scratch, give them an AI-generated draft and ask them to:
• Review and debug it
• Challenge unnecessary complexity
• Explain what needs verification before going into production

AI isn’t removing the software engineer, it’s moving the bottleneck. 💡

While most of the tech industry is asking "how much code can AI write?", we should be asking: "Who is making sure that code is actually right?"

Sonar’s 2026 Developer Survey revealed a wild gap:

👉 42% of committed code is now AI-generated.

👉 Yet 96% of developers don't fully trust AI code to be functionally correct.

AI can write code instantly, but in production environments, verification is everything. Giving a poor engineer AI tools just allows them to build technical debt faster. Giving a great engineer AI tools turns them into a high-velocity powerhouse.

The value of an engineer is shifting from simply writing lines of code to directing, judging, and architecting systems.

A lot of mobile teams think the solution to shipping faster is just throwing more developers at the codebase.
In reality? Adding headcount without fixing the underlying setup usually just leads to more merge conflicts, longer PR reviews, and a lot of extra Slack threads. 😅
The engineering teams we see moving the fastest aren't necessarily the biggest, they’re the ones focused on removing technical friction:
▫️ Zero-stress deploys: Bringing in specialists who set up automated snapshot QA so nobody is terrified to hit "release" on a Friday afternoon (like a Lead Android Architect on our roster who built zero-bug pipelines for Tesco Bank & Deliveroo).
▫️ Trimming rendering lag: Optimizing bundle sizes so consumer apps actually load instantly (like a Senior React Native Lead we're representing who cut mobile banking rendering lag by 30%).
