Hear from Clare at Accendo Coaching & Training about MS and her journey.

MS Awareness Week

Yesterday I started to share my MS symptoms and the journey I went on to get my diagnosis. Today I'll share the moment of truth and my reaction.

It took 6 months from the GP referral until finally seeing the Neurologist and when I did in January 2023, he instantly knew that I was a "No Nonsense" girl and he communicated with me well 😁

When I'm stressed and under pressure I just want you to be brief, be bright, and be gone. Give me the facts I need to be able to make a decision and then allow me to process the information.

He did not beat around the bush 😁

"Mrs Cahill, demyelination is MS, however with your symptoms I would have never put you in the MRI scanner & if it makes you feel better, I've completed post mortem's where I have had to capture MS and they've lived their life with NO symptoms."

"Go & live your life, take vitamin D because none of us get enough of that living in the UK and I'll see you in 6 months time unless you have a relapse"

Off I went & did just that 👍

May 2023 I started to lose the vision in my left eye and had horrendous pain behind it. Panic set in. My late Grandad was blind & could only see out of his peripheral vision so when you've had your sight and to lose it was catastrophic in my brain at that moment in time.

My sight is so important that even on my donor card I've specifically requested to keep my eyes so that I can see the journey I go on after death. After all they are the windows of your soul 👁️

I was diagnosed with Optic Neuritis which is inflammation of the optic nerve and can be the start of MS. This was the 1st time I made the phone call to the MS nurses after the GP told me just to take paracetamol & Nurofen to treat a stress headache 🫣 She instantly referred me back to Neurology as this was an MS relapse.

Summer 2023, I was with the team at Sheffield hospitals and thankfully the Optic Neuritis had cleared on it's own without the need for steroids and I passed all the other tests so in my head "I'm an anomoly".

Optic Neuritis was 1 clinical diagnosis and at this stage normally it would be a waiting game for another relapse, however because I had already had an MRI and sufficient time had passed I was back in the scanner & booked for a Lumbar Puncture (which nobody wants ever!)

The results were back & when the lumbar puncture came back that my bands were positive I knew in my heart of hearts an MS diagnosis would be made.

October 2023 I had my diagnosis & offered a treatment plan. Me being me, the "No Nonsense", strong, independent woman was doing it her way & in her time.

January 2024 I committed to a DMT plan because this was the year I turned 50 and I had my 50@50 experiences to complete. I didn't have time for a relapse, I was too busy living life 🧡

I took my health into my own hands to give my body what it needs. Thank you to Lily Samuels who started me off on this journey & to Tina Hancocks who is currently supporting me.
