A moment of reminiscence and reflection in a busy care home. This is my third interim management role since March. I have met some amazing people and have enjoyed sharing my knowledge and skills to further improve the care people provide.

People put their trust in me and thank me for what I do but rarely consider how I gain from my work with them. I believe making connections is a two way experience and I have gained a lot from meeting like minded people who truly care.

I am passionate about what I do and just share that passion. My aim is always to enable people to believe in themselves, so they step into the sunshine and showcase what can they do. My aim is to leave people to continue to be their best possible selves.

Sikh prayer is something I knew little about until this week. During a care review I explored ways to support a lady living with dementia. Her daughter and I talked about all aspects of her care, and how to promote her wellbeing, to reduce times of distress. Her daughter let me listen to a Sikh evening prayer and, even though I didn’t understand the language, I could feel myself relaxing while listening.

Through the family review we have developed a deeper understanding of the person and how to support them to live their best possible life.

The past three weeks have been busy, working away from home in Slough. Tiring but inspiring, with a very receptive care home team. Amazing feedback, so worth my hard work.

This film has many layers, illustrating love and friendship; valuing others and sharing meaningful time.

This film can teach people a lot about kindness and the importance of seeing people for who they are, without prejudice.

‘I promise you I will make tomorrow you happy,’ explains a young man when speaking to his girlfriend with Anterograde Amnesia, in the film ‘Even If This Love Disappears Tonight’.

The film illustrates how a loving relationship can benefit someone living with memory difficulties. Young characters may be easier for some people to relate to, making it an interesting way to learn about memory loss and how to manage it positively. We learn that love doesn't disappear when someone experiences memory loss, and how happiness can come from the moments we share with people.

This Korean film (in English and currently on Netflix) is a romance. The main character is unable to create new memories and recall recent events due to damage to her brain. However, she retains procedural memory, initially evidenced by her riding a bike in the film. The film shows her losing memories when she falls asleep, so she uses her computer, phone and paper to store information about her boyfriend and what they have done, but when she experiences loss, it leaves her confused. Procedural memory is explained through patterns in behaviour and feelings.

I will not spoil the ending, but be prepared for tears.

People often ask me about people with dementia making their own decisions about their care. Sometimes they are not able to make their own decisions, so relevant legislation is used to keep them safe while also ensuring they have the best possible options for them. The process doesn’t need to be complicated but people need training to ensure legislation is followed and people maintain as much independence as possible.

This week I have researched learning opportunities and gaps in the market, where I can develop my own courses. As a result, I produced a tool and a training course to help people understand how the decision-making process relates to mental capacity assessment. Please contact me for more information.

It is exciting to launch my new business, VI The Care Consultant. After many years of full-time employment, I took the step into the unknown and uncertainty of self-employment, working in a bespoke way, directly with people, where I can make the biggest difference.

Working as a care consultant is a natural step for me, as I can share a wealth of knowledge and experience in social care, with the added benefit of a strong academic background that brings together understanding of care services, dementia care, management and education.
