Back last year I built this tumbled liscannor wall. Then I was filmed brushing it 🤷

I leave a note in a Guinness bottle behind big builds. Depending on my mood the notes can range from pleasant to unhinged. Sometimes pleasantly unhinged

A dry-joint reclaimed sandstone sunroom.
I enjoyed this one. It wasn't easy, but worthwhile work rarely is.
I often wonder what these builds will mean to me in years to come. When you've laid so many stones, there's always the chance the memories start to run together. I hope they don't.
I'd like each one to stand as a small record of a moment in time. Not just of the craft, but of life itself. The years I was happy, the years I struggled, the years I grew, and the years I simply kept going.
Maybe that's what we're really building in the end. Not walls or sunrooms, but a trail of memories set in stone.

A dry joint snecked masonry entrance pillar I built last year. Using reclaimed sandstone and granite. The stone came from an old mill on the property.

Back outside today. Building this tumbled liscannor newbuild. I'm sure a lot of people can relate to working outside. Even on a cold cloudy day it's better than being stuck inside The stone is from

Some of the more recent houses I've built stone on. Donegal sandstone, liscannor stone and grit sandstone

So close to getting this one finished. Sandstone dry joint fireplace. I've enjoyed this one. This will hopefully be a focal point of a lived in home eventually. For generations to come. The stone is Donegal sandstone

The weather had other plans for me today. I should've been out in the open air, but the forecast led me astray 🙄.
No matter. The day wasn't wasted. I've been making steady progress on this sandstone fireplace, laid dry joint, one stone at a time. Another wet day should see most of it finished.
It's been built with a wood-burning stove in mind. A proper place for fire, warmth, and gathering. As for the hearth... that's a story for another day 😂

Progress report 😂

It was a day for ducks today. While the rain tapped away outside, I spent the day building this dry-joint sandstone fireplace and managed to stay dry myself. I've built more of these than I can count over the years, but I still enjoy every one. They're not fast work. Certainly slower than working outdoors but internal stonework rarely likes to be rushed. A bit of patience, one stone at a time, and it slowly comes to life.
