Here is a little breakdown to give you a better understanding on what PCI compliance is and why it’s important to complete (if you have to)

PCI compliance (PCI DSS) in the UK is a mandatory, global set of security standards for any business—regardless of size—that accepts, stores, processes, or transmits cardholder data. It protects against theft and fraud, requires annual validation, and is mandated by card brands like Visa and Mastercard, not law.

Key Aspects of PCI Compliance in the UK

Definition: Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is a set of 12 security requirements designed to ensure that all companies that accept, process, store, or transmit credit card information maintain a secure environment.

Who Must Comply: Any UK business that handles debit or credit card data, whether in-person, online, or via mail/telephone order (MOTO).

Requirements: Businesses must meet these requirements within 90 days of starting to take payments and re-validate annually.

Consequences of Non-Compliance: Failure to comply can result in monthly fees, fines from acquiring banks, and liability for data breaches.

Levels of Compliance: Compliance requirements are divided into four levels based on transaction volume, with Level 1 being the highest (over 6 million transactions/year).

Validation Tools: Compliance is usually validated via a Self-Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ) for smaller merchants or a Report on Compliance (ROC) for larger, high-volume merchants.

Latest Standard: Businesses should be working towards or are already compliant with PCI DSS V4

Steps to Compliance

Assess: Identify the cardholder data, systems, and processes involved.

Remediate: Fix vulnerabilities, such as removing stored card data, securing networks, and maintaining anti-virus software.

Report: Complete the required SAQ or have a Qualified Security Assessor (QSA) perform an assessment, then submit it to your merchant bank.

Not all acquiring banks require you to complete PCI. Some acquirers already have this inbuilt to protect and be compliant without having the merchant involved.
