🇮🇳 Amanda's amazing trip to India - Part 1 - Delhi 🇮🇳

☔ We arrived to Delhi in the early hours of the morning, in the pouring rain!

🏨 We stayed at the Metropolitan Hotel for 2 nights, about 30 mins from the airport, and were greeted with the traditional garland of marigolds from the hotel staff.

🛺 After a comfortable nights sleep we made our way to Old Delhi for a rickshaw ride through the back streets, passing many shops selling tea, spices and the most beautiful dresses and saris in a variety of bright, vibrant colours, and finishing at the Red Fort. To say it was a bit bumpy was an under statement but definitely well worth it.

🇮🇳 Next up was the Gandhi Memorial. This included the the building where he spent the last 144 days of his life. And the very spot where he was assassinated on 30 January 1948. Despite being in a busy part of New Delhi, once inside there is a sense of calm and peacefulness in the well maintained gardens with an abundance of birdlife around.

🕌 The UNESCO listed Qutb Minar is a 72.5 meter tower built of sandstone between 1199 and 1220. It is surrounded by the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque which is the earliest Hindu mosque built by the Delhi Sultans. It is made from the carvings and sandstone blocks from 27 Hindu and Jain temples from around India. The way it is set out and the ruins that you can see reminded me of the ruins in the Jungle Book.

🕌 Our final visit in Delhi was to the local Sikh Mosque. One of the most popular mosques in Delhi, we were lucky to be able to go inside and see the amazing decoration inside the Mosque. We then had a tour of the community kitchens where they feed approx 30,000 people everyday!

😍 Delhi is an amazing city with big contrasts between the Old and New. A visit to Delhi is a must on any trip to India.
